Urgent Rescue Efforts Underway in Indonesia Following School Collapse That Trapped Dozens

Rescue operations are underway in East Java, Indonesia, as authorities search for 38 individuals trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed school building. The Al-Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo caved in on Monday, resulting in the tragic deaths of three students and leaving 99 others hospitalized, some with severe injuries. Hundreds of students had gathered in the building for prayers when the disaster struck, prompting a desperate race against time for rescuers to locate survivors.

Rescue Efforts Intensify Amidst Uncertainty

Rescue teams have been working tirelessly since the collapse, with officials reporting that cries for help can still be heard from beneath the debris. Families of the trapped individuals have gathered at the site, anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones. As of Wednesday, eleven people have been rescued from the wreckage, although two of them later succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. One individual remains trapped but is able to communicate with rescuers, who are attempting to reach him by constructing a tunnel under the building. However, the precarious situation poses risks of further collapse, complicating the rescue efforts.

Mudji Irmawan, a civil engineering expert involved in the assessment of the collapsed structure, emphasized the need for caution during the rescue operations. He warned that removing debris could destabilize the remaining structure, potentially endangering the lives of those still trapped. Mohammad Syafii, head of the search and rescue agency Basarnas, echoed these concerns, stating that even minor vibrations could trigger additional collapses.

Building Expansion Without Permits

The Al-Khoziny Islamic Boarding School was reportedly undergoing construction to add two additional floors when the disaster occurred. The local disaster mitigation agency indicated that the building’s foundations were not stable enough to support the extra weight. Sidoarjo’s regent revealed that the school’s management had not obtained the necessary permits for the expansion, raising questions about safety regulations and oversight.

As rescue operations continue, the focus remains on locating survivors within the critical “golden timeframe” of 72 hours following the collapse. Rescuers are equipped with limited access, navigating through underground culverts to reach those trapped. Despite the challenges, officials remain hopeful that they can detect signs of life and facilitate rescues.

Survivor Accounts and Community Response

Among the survivors is 13-year-old Muhammad Rijalul Qoib, who recounted the harrowing moments leading up to the collapse. He described hearing the sound of falling rocks as hundreds of students prepared for prayer. In a panic, Rijalul attempted to escape but was struck by debris. Fortunately, he managed to find an exit with the help of another person. His experience highlights the chaos and fear that engulfed the scene as the building crumbled.

Tragically, local media identified one of the deceased students as Maulana Alvan Ibrahimavic, who had recently graduated from elementary school and enrolled at Al-Khoziny just four months prior. The community is mourning the loss, with police escorting his body to the funeral home as family and friends grapple with the aftermath of this devastating event. As rescue efforts continue, the focus remains on saving lives and addressing the broader implications of building safety regulations in the region. The community stands united in hope for the safe return of those still trapped beneath the rubble.
