NHRC Launches Two-Week Online Short Term Internship Programme for September 2025

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has launched its Online Short Term Internship Programme (OSTI) for September 2025, selecting 80 students from a pool of 896 applicants. These interns, hailing from diverse academic backgrounds across 21 states and union territories, will participate in a two-week program aimed at enhancing their understanding of human rights promotion and protection in India. The initiative runs from September 22 to October 3, 2025, and seeks to cultivate awareness and responsibility among youth regarding human rights issues.
Inaugural Address Highlights
During the program’s opening ceremony, NHRC Secretary General Shri Bharat Lal emphasized the importance of fostering awareness and sensitivity among young people towards human rights. He noted that the internship is grounded in constitutional values and aims to address contemporary challenges, including climate change, artificial intelligence, cybercrime, and the exploitation of workers in the gig economy. The Secretary General encouraged interns to engage actively, ask questions, and embody values such as justice, empathy, and dignity. The program aspires to transform participants into ambassadors of human rights, equipping them to apply these principles in their personal and professional lives.
Focus on Emerging Human Rights Issues
Shri Bharat Lal also highlighted critical areas of focus for the internship, including business and human rights, labor rights, and climate-induced displacement. He stressed that true leadership involves not only taking action against injustice but also refusing to remain silent or complicit in the face of wrongdoing. The program serves as a call for self-reflection and purposeful living, encouraging participants to contribute meaningfully to society. According to Lal, those who dedicate their lives to serving others are the ones who leave a lasting impact.
Program Overview and Curriculum
NHRC Joint Secretary Smt. Saidingpuii Chhakchhuak welcomed the interns and provided an overview of the program’s curriculum. The carefully structured program includes lectures and virtual tours of significant institutions, such as Tihar Jail, Shelter Home, and Police Station, to offer participants direct insights into the realities of human rights. Chhakchhuak also informed the interns about various activities and competitions designed to enhance their understanding of human rights and build their confidence.
Empowering Future Advocates
The Online Short Term Internship Programme aims to equip students from various academic disciplines with the knowledge and skills necessary to address human rights challenges effectively. Through interactive sessions and engaging activities, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of international human rights law, relevant issues in India, and effective advocacy strategies. This initiative is designed to empower the next generation of advocates, enabling them to make significant contributions to the promotion and protection of human rights in their communities and beyond.
