Indian Railways Starts Loading Fresh Apples from Kashmir to Delhi Market

Considering the needs of fruit growers in the Kashmir Valley, Indian Railways (IR) has taken significant steps to enhance the transportation of apples to major markets in Delhi. The introduction of two dedicated Parcel Van coaches will facilitate the movement of 23 metric tonnes of apples each, with plans for additional vans if demand increases. As the apple season kicks off, a daily time-tabled parcel train service will commence on September 13, providing growers with a streamlined option for shipping their produce.
Enhanced Transportation for Apple Growers
Indian Railways is responding to the logistical needs of apple growers in the Kashmir Valley by deploying two Parcel Van coaches specifically for apple transportation. Each van is designed to carry 23 metric tonnes of apples, ensuring that growers can efficiently send their produce to markets in Delhi. The initiative aims to support local farmers and improve their access to larger markets. If demand warrants, Indian Railways is prepared to provide additional parcel vans to accommodate the needs of the growers.
The Principal Chief Commercial Manager of Northern Railway, along with the Divisional Railway Manager of Jammu Division, is actively coordinating with state authorities, the horticulture department, and various fruit growers’ associations. This collaboration is crucial for ensuring that the transportation services meet the requirements of the local agricultural community.
Daily Time-Tabled Parcel Train Service
Starting September 13, Indian Railways will launch a daily time-tabled parcel train service between Badgam and Adarsh Nagar. This new service will offer flexibility for individual traders and fruit growers, allowing them to book parcel vans online through a dedicated portal. The introduction of this service is expected to streamline the shipping process, making it easier for growers to transport their apples to the Delhi market.
Additionally, a notification has been issued for an eight Parcel Van daily time-tabled Joint Parcel Product- Rapid Cargo Service parcel train. This train will depart from Badgam Railway Station at 6:15 AM and arrive at Adarsh Nagar Railway Station by 5:00 AM the following day. This timing is strategically chosen to ensure that apples reach the Delhi market early in the morning, maximizing their freshness and marketability.
Infrastructure Developments in Kashmir
The recent enhancements in freight services are part of a broader effort by Indian Railways to improve connectivity in the Kashmir Valley. On August 9, the first freight train carrying 21 wagons of cement successfully arrived at the Anantnag Goods Shed from Punjab. This milestone marks a significant step in integrating the region into the national freight network, which is expected to accelerate infrastructure projects and reduce costs for local residents.
The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link, inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi in June, is now operational, facilitating the movement of goods and passengers alike. This rail link also supports two Vande Bharat trains running between Katra and Srinagar, both of which are operating at full capacity. These developments not only enhance transportation options but also promote economic growth in the region.
Future Prospects and Demand
Indian Railways remains committed to meeting the transportation needs of the Kashmir Valley. The organization is prepared to run additional parcel trains if further demand arises. By providing the necessary infrastructure and services, Indian Railways aims to empower local farmers and traders, ensuring that they can efficiently transport their goods to larger markets.
As the apple season progresses, the collaboration between Indian Railways and local stakeholders will be crucial in maximizing the benefits of these new services. The ongoing efforts to improve connectivity and transportation options in the region are expected to have a lasting impact on the local economy and the livelihoods of those involved in agriculture.
