Fujifilm Launches Groundbreaking Medium-Format Cinema Camera with 8K Video and Film Simulations

Fujifilm has officially launched its first cinema camera, the GFX Eterna 55, after teasing it last year. This high-end model features a 44x33mm 102MP medium-format sensor, capable of shooting 8K video in various formats, including anamorphic. Priced at $16,499, the GFX Eterna 55 aims to compete in the professional cinema market, which is dominated by established brands like RED. Alongside the camera, Fujifilm also introduced a new cine lens designed specifically for this model.
Advanced Sensor Technology
The GFX Eterna 55 utilizes the same advanced sensor technology found in Fujifilm’s flagship stills camera, the GFX100 II. This second-generation 102MP sensor is significantly larger than traditional full-frame sensors, allowing for a broader range of cinematic formats and resolutions. The camera supports video recording up to 8K and offers a variety of video codecs, including internal Apple ProRes 422 HQ and external 12-bit RAW via HDMI. With a dual base ISO of 800 and 3200, the GFX Eterna 55 boasts a dynamic range that exceeds 14EV, making it suitable for various lighting conditions.
In addition to its impressive video capabilities, the camera supports subject detection and tracking autofocus when paired with an autofocus-equipped GF lens. This feature enhances the shooting experience, especially for filmmakers who require precision in their work. The GFX Eterna 55 is designed to cater to the needs of professional cinematographers, providing them with the tools necessary for high-quality production.
Design and Usability
The GFX Eterna 55 is built with a focus on professional usability, weighing 4.41 lbs (2 kg) and measuring 110.8 x 138.2 x 176.8 mm. Its design is not intended for handheld use; instead, it is optimized for tripod or rig setups, especially when using larger cine lenses and accessories. The camera features twin displays, including a 3-inch onboard screen and a removable 5-inch display with a brightness of 2,000 nits, which is useful for outdoor shooting.
Additionally, the GFX Eterna 55 includes a built-in variable electronic ND filter with a range of 2-7EV, adjustable in half-stop increments. This feature allows filmmakers to control exposure without changing the aperture or shutter speed, providing greater flexibility during shoots. The camera also offers a selection of professional-grade connection ports, ensuring compatibility with various equipment and accessories.
Competing in a Challenging Market
Entering the competitive professional cinema camera market is no small feat, especially with established players like RED dominating the field. However, Fujifilm is optimistic about the GFX Eterna 55’s potential. The camera’s specifications and features are designed to impress, and the company hopes that showcasing its capabilities through upcoming projects will help establish its presence in this space.
One such project is a short film titled “Okay,” directed by Andrew Kightlinger and shot by cinematographer Oren Soffer, which aims to highlight the camera’s strengths. As Fujifilm ventures into this challenging market, it will be interesting to see how the GFX Eterna 55 performs against its competitors and whether it can carve out a niche for itself among professional filmmakers.
