JBL’s Affordable On-Ear Headphones: A Strong Recommendation with One Major Flaw

I recently tested the JBL Tune 510BT on-ear headphones, which are priced under $30. While they promise a lightweight design and “JBL pure bass,” my experience revealed both strengths and weaknesses. Despite their affordability and decent sound quality, I found the comfort level lacking, which ultimately influenced my overall impression of the product.

Affordable and Portable Design

The JBL Tune 510BT headphones stand out for their affordability, retailing at approximately $29.95 in the U.S. and around ยฃ23 in the UK. This price point makes them an attractive option for budget-conscious consumers. Their compact and foldable design enhances portability, allowing users to easily store them in a bag or even a larger pocket.

In terms of sound quality, the headphones deliver a commendable performance for their price. During testing, tracks like “Sakura” by Chris Stussy and Locklead showcased impactful bass that complemented other instrumental elements. While the bass may not be the cleanest at higher volumes, it remains satisfactory for casual listening. Similarly, vocals in “Black Eye” by Allie X were clear, although the overall sound lacked detailed separation. The headphones also feature multi-point connectivity, voice assistant integration, and hands-free calling, adding to their appeal as a budget-friendly option.

Comfort Issues Affect Experience

Despite the positives, comfort proved to be a significant drawback. Users with larger heads or ears may find the on-ear design uncomfortable, as the headphones apply considerable pressure during use. This discomfort was particularly noticeable during extended listening sessions, leading to visible redness on the ears. For individuals with piercings, the pressure can exacerbate discomfort, making the experience less enjoyable.

While some users with smaller heads may not encounter these issues, the overall fit may not suit everyone. The discomfort I experienced made me hesitant to continue using the Tune 510BT, prompting a return to my over-ear headphones for a more comfortable listening experience.
