First Training Squadron Departs Seychelles

The First Training Squadron (1TS) of the Indian Navy has successfully concluded a four-day visit to Port Victoria, Seychelles, which ended on September 4, 2025. The squadron, consisting of INS Tir, INS Shardul, and ICGS Sarathi, engaged in various bilateral activities with the Seychelles Defence Force (SDF) aimed at strengthening military ties between the two nations. This visit is part of the ongoing Long Range Training Deployment, highlighting the commitment of both countries to enhance their maritime cooperation.

Strengthening Diplomatic Ties

During their stay, senior officers from the Indian Navy, including Capt Tijo K Joseph, met with key figures in the Seychelles government. They held discussions with Mr. Sylvestre Radegonde, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, and Major General Michael Rosette, the Chief of Defence Forces. These meetings underscored the long-standing partnership between Seychelles and India, focusing on military collaboration and mutual support. The interactions were designed to reinforce the existing bonds and explore further avenues for cooperation in defense and security.

Cultural and Community Engagement

The visit also featured a range of cultural and community activities. A deck reception was hosted aboard the 1TS ships, attended by senior SDF leadership, members of the Indian diaspora, and diplomats. Major General Rosette expressed gratitude for the Indian Navy’s role in enhancing regional maritime cooperation. Additionally, combined yoga sessions onboard attracted enthusiastic participation from both locals and the Indian community. The Indian Naval band performed at the Victoria Town Clock Tower, receiving accolades from the audience. A friendly football match between Indian Navy and SDF personnel fostered camaraderie, while community outreach efforts included providing essential supplies and medical check-ups to residents of an elderly home in Point Larue.

Training and Professional Development

The visit proved to be an enriching experience for the Indian Naval trainees, who toured the Seychelles Coast Guard Base and Maritime Training & Support Centre. As part of their training, SDF personnel received instruction on small arms handling and firefighting techniques aboard the 1TS ships. Furthermore, professional interactions were held with the Spanish Navy during the visit of ESPS Navarra, enhancing the training experience for all involved. These activities not only contributed to the professional development of the trainees but also strengthened the operational capabilities of both the Indian Navy and the Seychelles Defence Forces.

Commitment to Regional Cooperation

The successful completion of this deployment reinforces the strong friendship between India and Seychelles. It highlights the Indian Navy’s dedication to fostering maritime cooperation and regional partnerships, aligning with the vision of MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions). This visit is a testament to the ongoing efforts to enhance security and collaboration in the Indian Ocean region, ensuring a stable and secure maritime environment for both nations.
