Prime Minister Participates in India-Japan Economic Forum

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba convened at the India-Japan Economic Forum in Tokyo on August 29, 2025. The event, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry and Keidanren, brought together prominent industry leaders from both nations, including CEOs from the India-Japan Business Leadersโ Forum. During the forum, Modi emphasized the robust partnership between India and Japan, particularly in investment, manufacturing, and technology, while inviting Japanese businesses to explore opportunities in India amidst a challenging global economic landscape.
Strengthening Economic Ties
In his address, Prime Minister Modi underscored the success of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. He highlighted the importance of deepening economic ties between the two nations, especially in light of current global economic uncertainties. Modi pointed out that India’s political stability, predictable policies, and commitment to reforms have instilled confidence among investors. This confidence is reflected in India’s recent credit rating upgrade by international agencies. He urged Japanese companies to expand their operations in India, noting that the Indian economy is poised for significant growth, contributing approximately 18% to global economic expansion.
Key Areas for Collaboration
Modi identified five critical areas where India and Japan could enhance their business collaboration. These include manufacturing sectors such as batteries, robotics, semiconductors, shipbuilding, and nuclear energy. He also emphasized the need for cooperation in technology and innovation, particularly in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, space exploration, and biotechnology. Additionally, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of transitioning to green energy, developing next-generation infrastructure, and fostering skill development and people-to-people connections. These initiatives align with India’s “Make in India” campaign and aim to leverage the complementarities of both economies.
Japanese Perspectives on Partnership
Prime Minister Ishiba echoed Modi’s sentiments, expressing the interest of Japanese companies in collaborating with Indian talent to create resilient supply chains. He outlined three main priorities for the partnership: strengthening people-to-people connections, merging technology with green initiatives, and cooperating in critical sectors, particularly in high and emerging technologies like semiconductors. Ishiba’s remarks reinforced the commitment of both nations to foster a collaborative environment that benefits their respective economies.
Business Leaders Forum Report
During the forum, the co-chairs of the 12th India Japan Business Leadersโ Forum (IJBLF) presented their report to both leaders. Mr. Norihiko Ishiguro, Chairman and CEO of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), announced several business-to-business memorandums of understanding (MoUs) signed between Indian and Japanese companies. These agreements span various sectors, including steel, artificial intelligence, space, education, clean energy, and human resource exchanges. The growing partnerships between Indian and Japanese industries signal a promising future for bilateral trade and collaboration.
