Campaign Launched for the International Year of Cooperatives

The Ministry of Cooperation is gearing up to celebrate the UN International Year of Cooperatives (IYC) in 2025, under the theme โ€œCooperatives Build a Better World.โ€ This initiative was officially launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the ICA Global Cooperative Conference in 2024. To mark this significant occasion, the Ministry has rolled out a series of initiatives aimed at showcasing the vital role of cooperatives in promoting inclusive and sustainable development, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Annual Action Plan Unveiled

On January 24, 2025, in Mumbai, the Union Home and Cooperation Minister released a comprehensive Annual Action Plan designed to commemorate IYC 2025. This plan was developed in collaboration with various stakeholders from the cooperative sector. It encompasses a diverse array of activities, including awareness campaigns, capacity-building programs, and initiatives aimed at engaging stakeholders. Since its launch, stakeholders across the nation have actively participated in implementing these initiatives, reinforcing the importance of cooperatives in local communities.

Nationwide Awareness Campaigns

As part of its outreach efforts, the IYC logo has been prominently featured on Indian Railways E-tickets, official government websites, and packaging for cooperative products, such as milk packets. The logo has also been displayed during all matches of the Womenโ€™s Premier League in 2025. Additionally, a special edition of Kurukshetra Magazine, published in July 2025, highlights the achievements of the cooperative sector, further promoting awareness and engagement among the public.

National Conference of State Cooperation Ministers

A significant event in the IYC 2025 celebrations was the National Conference of State Cooperation Ministers, held on June 30, 2025, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. This conference was chaired by the Union Home and Cooperation Minister and featured various activities organized by different States and Union Territories, including Bihar, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan. The conference served as a platform for discussing cooperative initiatives and fostering collaboration among states.

Promoting Inclusivity and Transparency

The Ministry’s initiatives aim to enhance participation across all states and sectors within the cooperative ecosystem. Special attention is being given to activities that promote transparency, operational efficiency, and accountability. The Ministry is also focused on encouraging cooperation among cooperatives and actively engaging youth and women in cooperative initiatives. Furthermore, efforts are being made to strengthen cooperative governance through the adoption and implementation of model bye-laws, ensuring a robust framework for cooperative operations. This information was shared by Cooperation Minister Amit Shah in a written response to a question in the Rajya Sabha.
