UPI Transforms into OBI in Special Ops 2: A Bollywood Shift

It’s not uncommon for Indian audiences to experience edits and alterations in films and web series due to the regulations set by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The latest example of this is the action thriller series Special Ops 2, which has undergone significant changes before its release. The show, centered around cyber terrorism, features a character played by Tahir Raj Bhasin, who is depicted as a cybercriminal with malicious intentions. Notably, the term “UPI” (United Payments Interface) has been replaced with “OBI” in the series, reflecting the sensitivity surrounding the topic.
Changes to Key Terminology
In a recent update, sources revealed that the term “UPI” was altered to “OBI” in Special Ops 2. This change was not only made in the series itself but also affected the promotional materials. The original trailer, which included the reference to UPI, has been removed and replaced with a new promo that highlights the updated terminology and the revised release date. This adjustment indicates the creators’ compliance with CBFC guidelines, which often dictate the language used in media to avoid sensitive topics.
The decision to modify the terminology appears to be a precautionary measure. An industry insider suggested that the production team likely received directives to avoid mentioning UPI due to its sensitive nature. This could also explain the postponement of the show’s release from July 11 to July 18, allowing time for necessary edits and dubbing.
Impact on the Series
Despite the changes, insiders believe that the alterations do not detract from the storyline. The essence of the villain’s intentions remains clear, even with the new terminology. Furthermore, it was noted that other sensitive terms, such as “Reserve Bank of India” and “China,” have been permitted in the series, suggesting a selective approach to censorship.
Special Ops 2 features a talented cast, including Kay Kay Menon, Karan Tacker, Saiyami Kher, Prakash Raj, Parmeet Sethi, and Muzzamil Ibrahim. The series premiered on July 18 on JioHotstar, following the success of its first season in 2020 and a mini-series titled Special Ops 1.5, which was released in late 2021.
