WHO EMRO | World No Tobacco Day 2025: Addressing Tobacco Use

On May 31, the world will observe World No Tobacco Day 2025, focusing on the theme โBright Products. Dark Intentions.โ This year’s campaign highlights the tobacco industry’s strategies to attract women and youth through colorful and flavored products. With tobacco use being the leading cause of preventable deaths globally, the Eastern Mediterranean Region faces alarming smoking rates, particularly among adolescents. The rise of new nicotine products, including e-cigarettes, has exacerbated the issue, prompting urgent calls for action to protect vulnerable populations.
Rising Tobacco Use Among Youth
Tobacco consumption remains a significant public health challenge, especially in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, where the World Health Organization (WHO) reports some of the highest smoking rates among young people. Approximately 37 million children aged 13 to 15 are currently using tobacco worldwide. In this region, smoking rates among adolescent boys have reached as high as 43%, with countries like Jordan, Lebanon, and Egypt leading the statistics. Alarmingly, the prevalence of tobacco use among adolescent girls is also rising, with rates hitting 20% in certain areas. The occupied Palestinian territory has the highest recorded rate among boys at 43.3%, followed closely by Jordan at 33.9% and Syria at 31.6%.
The increasing popularity of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products is particularly concerning. These products often come in a variety of flavors and eye-catching designs that appeal to younger demographics. Research indicates that 9 out of 10 e-cigarette users are attracted to flavored options, which raises dependency rates among adolescents and young adults. This trend underscores the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to combat tobacco use among youth.
Health Risks and Gender Disparities
The narrowing gap in tobacco use between genders poses additional health risks, particularly for women and girls. As more females take up smoking, they become vulnerable to serious health issues, including cervical cancer, osteoporosis, and fertility complications. The WHO emphasizes the critical need for immediate action to address these disparities. Dr. Hanan Balkhy, WHO Regional Director, has highlighted the alarming youth smoking rates in the region, calling for collective efforts to protect future generations from the tobacco industry’s manipulative tactics.
The health implications of tobacco use extend beyond individual smokers, affecting families and communities. As the tobacco industry continues to target vulnerable populations, the need for effective public health interventions becomes increasingly urgent. The WHO’s initiative aims to address the shared vulnerabilities of women and adolescents, recognizing the socioeconomic factors that contribute to their susceptibility to tobacco addiction.
Call to Action for Governments and Communities
In light of the rising tobacco use rates, the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean has launched a targeted initiative to combat this public health crisis. The initiative calls for collaborative efforts among governments, stakeholders, and communities to implement several key measures. These include banning flavored tobacco products and attractive designs, enforcing graphic health warnings on packaging, restricting advertising and promotion, and increasing taxes on tobacco products.
Dr. Balkhy emphasizes the importance of uniting against the tobacco industry’s tactics, urging all stakeholders to take bold action. By limiting or banning the use of appealing flavors and designs, particularly for emerging products like e-cigarettes and vapes, communities can work towards a healthier future. The call to action is clear: it is essential to protect children and future generations from the harmful effects of tobacco.
Raising Awareness on World No Tobacco Day
As World No Tobacco Day 2025 approaches, the focus will be on raising awareness about the tobacco industry’s deceptive practices. The campaign aims to educate the public about the dangers associated with tobacco use and the importance of creating a tobacco-free future. By coming together, communities can make a significant impact on public health and well-being.
The WHO encourages everyone to participate in the campaign and spread the message of a tobacco-free future. Together, through collective action and awareness, it is possible to combat the tobacco epidemic and safeguard the health of communities worldwide.
