Legal Battle Erupts Over Jatadhara Film Rights

In a dramatic turn of events, Content Films Productions Pvt Ltd has announced plans to take legal action against Ess Kay Gee Entertainment over alleged violations of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) concerning the upcoming film Jatadhara. The dispute centers around claims of ownership of the film’s Intellectual Property (IP), with Content Films asserting they hold a 50% stake. However, the film’s director, Venkat Kalyan, has vehemently denied these claims, labeling them as fraudulent and misleading.

Content Films Claims Ownership Rights

According to a notice published in Atul Mohan’s Complete Cinema magazine, Content Films Productions Pvt Ltd claims to possess 50% rights, including Intellectual Property Rights, for Jatadhara. This assertion is based on an MoU signed with Prerna Arora and Shivin Narang’s Ess Kay Gee Entertainment. The notice alleges that Ess Kay Gee has breached the terms of the agreement, prompting Content Films to prepare for legal proceedings against them.

Content Films argues that their ownership rights are justified due to the MoU stipulating a required investment of Rs. 10 crores. However, they contend that Ess Kay Gee has failed to meet this financial commitment, having only contributed Rs. 60 lakhs towards the film’s total budget of Rs. 20 crores. This alleged shortfall has led Content Films to claim that Ess Kay Gee’s actions constitute a breach of contract.

Director Venkat Kalyan Responds

In response to the claims made by Content Films, Venkat Kalyan, the writer and director of Jatadhara, has issued a strong rebuttal. He asserts that the allegations regarding Content Films’ ownership of the film’s IP are entirely false and misleading. Kalyan emphasizes that the financial contributions made by Content Films do not meet the requirements outlined in the MoU, thereby invalidating their claims.

Furthermore, Kalyan accuses Content Films of failing to fulfill their obligations related to line production and mismanaging financial accounts. He describes their behavior as unprofessional, leading to significant fallout between the parties involved. Kalyan has urged industry professionals to disregard Content Films’ public notice, labeling it as an attempt at defamation and harassment.

As a result of these developments, Kalyan has announced that legal action for defamation and damages will be initiated against Content Films’ representatives, Mr. Rajeev Agarwal and Mr. Arvind Agarwal, in the Bombay High Court.

IMPPA Steps In to Mediate

In the midst of this escalating dispute, the Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association (IMPPA) has intervened. On March 11, IMPPA issued a notice to the Agarwal brothers of Content Films, indicating that a hearing regarding the matter is scheduled for March 16, 2025. The association has requested both parties to refrain from taking any actions that could complicate the situation further.

As the legal battle unfolds, the film industry is closely watching the developments surrounding Jatadhara. The outcome of this dispute could have significant implications for both production companies and the broader landscape of film rights in Bollywood.
