Alfonsina Storni (29 May 1892 – 25 October 1938) was an Argentine poet and playwright of the modernist period.
Life and Career
Alfonsina Storni was born on May 29, 1892, in Sala Capriasca, Switzerland. Her parents, of Italian-Swiss descent, moved to Argentina when she was a child. Storni grew up in poverty and faced personal hardships, including the early death of her father. She worked various jobs to support herself and her son, Alejandro, whom she had at a young age.
Storni began her writing career as a journalist and later became involved in theater. Her poetry, known for its emotional depth and feminist themes, gained recognition and popularity. She published several poetry collections, including “El dulce daño” (1918), “Languidez” (1919), “Ocre” (1925), and “Mundo de siete pozos” (1934). Her works often tackled topics such as love, sexuality, female empowerment, and social injustice.

In 1910 she receives her title as “Maestra Rural.” In 1917 Storni receives the Premio Annual del Consejo Nacional de Mujeres. In 1920 Languidez, one of her publications was awarded the First Municipal prize as well as the second National Literature Prize.

Her poetry empowered women to express their voices and assert their rights.
