Nargis: The Eternal Star of Indian Cinema
Nargis Dutt (01 June 1929 โ 03 May 1981) was an Indian actress and politician who worked in Hindi cinema.
Life and Career
She was born on 01 June 1929, in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. In 1935, at the age of six, she made her film debut in Talashe Haq. Nargis appeared in several commercially successful and critically appreciated films between the 1940s and the 1960s, many of which featured actor and filmmaker Raj Kapoor. She appeared opposite Motilal in Mehboob Khan’s Taqdeer when she was 14 years old. She starred in many popular Hindi-Urdu movies of the late 1940s and 1950s such as Barsaat (1949), Andaz (1949), Awaara (1951), Deedar (1951), Shree 420 (1955), and Chori Chori (1956). In most of her films, she starred alongside Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar. She also starred in 1945’s Humayun opposite Ashok Kumar, one of the leading actors of that period. It was moderately successful. Among Mela, Anokha Pyar and Aag were among her earliest releases in 1948. In 1948, none of her films had a good run except for Mela, which was among the highest-grossing films of the year.
Her most well-known role came in Mehboob Khan’s 1957 rural drama Mother India. She won Best Actress at the Filmfare Awards and the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival for her performance as Radha in Mother India.
After marrying Sunil Dutt in 1958, Nargis left the film industry. The film Raat Aur Din was her last film appearance, for which she won a National Film Award for Best Actress, making her the first actress to win this award. Additionally, she was nominated for the Filmfare Best Actress Award.
She died on 03 May 1981, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.
Awards and Legacy
In 1958, she won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance in Mother India. In 1968, she was awarded the National Film Award for best actress.
In 1958, she received the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India. ย Nargis Dutt Memorial Cancer Foundation was established in 1982. The award for Best Feature Film on National Integration in the Annual Film Awards ceremony is called the Nargis Dutt Award in her honour. Stardust magazine and Hero Honda honored her with the “best actress of the Millennium” award in 2000. on 1 June 2015, google celebrated Nargisโ 86th Birthday with a doodle.
