YouTube Trials Dual-User Premium Subscription Plans
YouTube is currently piloting a two-person subscription plan for its Premium service, aiming to enhance its subscription growth. This new offering is being tested in four countries, including India, and is expected to be available to all users in the future. The two-person plan mirrors the Spotify Duo model, allowing two individuals to share a subscription while enjoying the benefits of YouTube Premium.
YouTube’s New Subscription Offering
The video streaming giant, owned by Google, is exploring a two-person YouTube Premium membership plan. This initiative was first reported by MoneyControl and is now visible on the YouTube India website. Currently, the two-person subscription is available only to a select group of users as part of a pilot program. In addition to India, the plan is also being tested in France, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. YouTube aims to provide more flexibility and value to its subscribers through this new tier.
The pricing for the two-person YouTube Premium plan is set at Rs. 219 per month, making it a more affordable option compared to the Family plan, which costs Rs. 299 monthly. Individual and student plans are also available at Rs. 149 and Rs. 89 per month, respectively. It is worth noting that YouTube raised its Premium subscription prices in India last August.
Eligibility and Requirements
To qualify for the two-person YouTube Premium plan, both individuals must be at least 13 years old, possess a Google Account, and reside in the same household. This requirement ensures that the subscription is shared among members of the same family or living arrangement. YouTube’s strategy to introduce this plan is seen as a way to boost its subscription revenue while reducing its dependence on advertising income.
The two-person plan allows users to enjoy the benefits of YouTube Premium at a lower cost, while still having separate accounts. This flexibility is expected to attract more users who may find the individual or family plans too expensive.
