World Post Day

World Post Day is celebrated each year on 9 October to raise awareness among people about the role of the postal sector for people as well as its contribution to the social and economic development of countries.

World Post Day is celebrated as an ode to the contribution and efforts of the postal industry.

HISTORY

World post day was firstly declared at UPC Congress 1969 in Tokyo, Japan. It was purposed by Shri Anand Mohan Narula. Since then, every year it is celebrated on October 9 and many countries across the world participate annually in the celebrations. On this day in many countries use the event to introduce new products and services of the post, while some use the day to reward their employees for good service.

In India, the beginning of National Postal Week is celebrated from October 9 to October 15.

On World Post Day, the UPU organise online letter writing competitions.

SIGNIFICANCE

In 1874, The Universal Post Union was established on October 9. It marks the importance of the universal mail and the contributions of the UPU towards society and the global economy. Different countries hold a special exhibition of stamps.
