WHO EMRO | World Blood Donor Day 2025: ‘Give Blood, Give Life’

World Blood Donor Day (WBDD), celebrated annually on June 14, aims to highlight the critical need for safe blood and to express gratitude to voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving contributions. This year’s theme, “Give blood, give hope โ together we save lives,” emphasizes the vital role of blood transfusions in healthcare. In low-income countries, women of childbearing age and children under five are the most frequent recipients of blood, underscoring the importance of regular donations to support vulnerable populations.
The Importance of Blood Donation
Access to safe blood is a cornerstone of effective health systems, particularly in the World Health Organization (WHO) Eastern Mediterranean Region. Many countries in this area struggle to meet the WHO’s recommended minimum of 10 blood donations per 1,000 people annually. Each donation has the potential to save up to three lives, yet voluntary, non-remunerated donations often make up less than half of the blood supply. This shortfall is particularly concerning in regions facing humanitarian crises, where blood shortages can have dire consequences for those affected by conflict or disaster.
Dr. Hanan Balkhy, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, emphasizes the life-saving potential of voluntary blood donation. She commends the selfless acts of donors, stating that their generosity brings hope to countless individuals in need. Stringent safety protocols ensure that the blood donation process is safe for both donors and recipients, allowing hospitals to maintain a steady supply of blood for surgeries and emergencies.
Challenges in Blood Supply
Despite the critical need for blood, many countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region face significant challenges in ensuring a reliable supply. The ongoing humanitarian emergencies exacerbate the situation, making it increasingly difficult to meet the needs of vulnerable groups. Women experiencing complications during pregnancy and children suffering from severe anemia due to malnutrition or malaria are among those who rely heavily on blood transfusions.
To address these challenges, WHO calls for a collaborative effort among individuals, communities, governments, and civil society. A robust and sustainable blood donor program is essential to ensure that every patient requiring a transfusion has access to safe blood. The organization urges stakeholders to invest in developing regulated blood systems that enhance the collection of blood from voluntary, unpaid donors.
Community Engagement and Initiatives
As part of the WBDD 2025 activities, the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean and the WHO Country Office in Egypt are collaborating with Egyptโs National Blood Transfusion Service to organize a blood donation drive. This initiative will allow WHO staff to contribute to the cause by donating blood, fostering a culture of community support and engagement.
Dr. Balkhy also encourages the youth to participate in blood donation, highlighting that their contributions can save lives. By coming together as a community, individuals can help build a healthier and more compassionate world. The call to action emphasizes the importance of regular donations and the collective responsibility to ensure that safe blood is available for those in need.
