West Bengal’s PM JANMAN Progress Report Highlights Key Developments
During a session in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs, Shri Durgadas Uikey, unveiled significant updates regarding the interventions under the PM JANMAN scheme in West Bengal, with data reflecting progress as of June 30, 2026. This initiative, which aims to uplift tribal communities, showcases various efforts across different ministries, indicating a multifaceted approach to development.
The report details contributions from several key ministries, including the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), and Ministry of Women and Child Development (MoWCD). For instance, under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G), the data reflects housing improvements, while the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) marks further progress in infrastructure.
District-Specific Achievements in Purulia
In Purulia district specifically, the government has sanctioned initiatives that include the construction of 204 additional classrooms valued at approximately Rs. 2,417.3 lakh, and repair work on a hostel costing Rs. 39.99 lakh. Moreover, the sanctioning of one Tribal Multi-Purpose Marketing Centre (TMMC) has been allocated Rs. 100 lakh. These projects are designed to foster educational and economic development within the tribal communities of the region.
The report reveals that while five villages in Purulia have received sanctioning under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), the district has yet to achieve full saturation. Additionally, three Mobile Medical Units (MMUs) have been sanctioned and are operational, further enhancing healthcare accessibility for the local Tribal Population.
Progress on PVTG Households and Survey Initiatives
The State Government has been proactive in collecting habitation-level data through the PM Gati Shakti mobile application, aiming to capture more precise figures of the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG). As per recent assessments, four districts, twenty-four blocks, and a total of 428 villages have been identified, with 495 PVTG habitations housing approximately 68,720 individuals.
Efforts include conducting a household survey that has so far recognized 18,173 PVTG households in West Bengal. The state government is expected to analyze this data and coordinate with relevant departments to address identified gaps regarding scheme norms and eligibility.
Funding and Future Proposals
While the responsibility for fund allocation, release, and utilization rests with the state government, it is essential for local administrations to propose new projects and submit their plans for future developments, such as Multi-Purpose Cooperative Societies (MPCs). Although no proposals for MPCs in Purulia have been received yet, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs is facilitating support through orientation programs to bolster proposal development.
The collaborative approach among various ministries and the commitment from the state government serves as a promising foundation for enhancing the welfare of tribal communities in West Bengal. The ongoing efforts are geared towards creating a more inclusive and developmental environment for underprivileged populations.
