Wedding Spending Drives Increased Consumer Consumption

As the wedding season kicks off in India, a surge in demand for extravagant celebrations is evident. With 46 lakh weddings projected to generate a staggering Rs 6.5-lakh-crore business between November 1 and December 14, hotels and vendors are bracing for a bustling period. From luxurious venues in Corbett to unique locations in Bodh Gaya, couples are opting for offbeat destinations, while shopping for traditional attire and accessories is in full swing.
The luxury fashion segment is witnessing a remarkable uptick, with brands like Raymond reporting increased interest in their premium collections. The company has noted a significant rise in sales of its Ethnix portfolio, which includes kurta sets starting at Rs 1,499 and sherwanis priced up to Rs 85,000. S L Pokharna, president of group commercial and supply chain at Raymond, mentioned that distribution partners are requesting early deliveries due to the high demand. This trend reflects a broader consumer shift towards quality and luxury in wedding attire, as couples seek to make a statement on their special day.
Destination Weddings on the Rise
Hotels across India are fully booked as couples choose picturesque locations for their nuptials. The Riverview Retreat in Corbett has reported that all wedding dates are reserved, with expectations of generating nearly Rs 15 crore from 18 destination weddings this season, compared to Rs 11 crore from 15 weddings last year. Shahzad Aslam, head of sales at Leisure Hotels Group, noted that the average expenditure per wedding at their venue has risen to approximately Rs 90 lakh. Similarly, ITC Hotels is experiencing strong interest in its newer properties, indicating a trend towards luxurious and unique wedding experiences.
Jewelry Sales Surge Amidst High Prices
The jewelry market is also thriving, with brands like Angara reporting a shift towards 18K gold and larger center stones despite rising metal prices. Ankur Daga, founder and CEO of Angara, stated that consumers are adapting by making smarter purchases. The demand for diamond bridal sets is increasing, and Kalyan Jewellers anticipates a significant growth in wedding-related sales this year. With jewelry traditionally accounting for about 15% of total wedding expenses, the outlook for the industry remains optimistic.
Regional Trends and Consumer Behavior
Regional variations in wedding spending are also emerging, with Indian Silk House Agencies noting strong momentum in Uttar Pradesh and central India. CEO Darshan Dudhoria highlighted that the eastern region is expected to pick up by December. Meanwhile, Fabindia has observed a shift towards ceremony-specific styling, while Ekaya Banaras is seeing interest in both experimental and timeless sarees. Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail’s Tasva has reported double-digit growth in same-store sales, reflecting a broader trend of increased consumer spending in the wedding sector. As the season progresses, businesses are optimistic about continued growth and engagement in the wedding market.
