Venture Capitalists Urged to Increase Funding for Defence Startups, According to Niti Aayog’s VK Saraswat
Niti Aayog member and former DRDO director general VK Saraswat emphasized the need for increased financial backing from venture capitalists for Indian defense startups during the Advantage Vidarbha-2026 Business Conclave and Investment Summit. He highlighted that while these startups have made significant progress, they require stronger funding to ensure sustained growth. Saraswat also discussed India’s defense strategy, which he stated is primarily driven by national needs rather than geopolitical considerations, and he outlined the implications of the upcoming 2026-27 Union Budget for the defense sector.
Call for Increased Venture Capital Support
VK Saraswat urged venture capitalists to enhance their financial support for Indian defense startups. He noted that these firms have evolved considerably but still face challenges in securing adequate funding. According to Saraswat, a robust financial backing is essential for these startups to scale their operations and contribute effectively to India’s defense capabilities. He pointed out that the current level of venture capital investment in this sector is insufficient, and there is a pressing need for more engagement from investors to foster innovation and growth.
India’s Defense Strategy Focused on National Requirements
During his address, Saraswat articulated that India’s defense strategy is fundamentally aligned with national requirements rather than influenced by global geopolitical dynamics. He stated, “It is about how we look at our own business requirements,” emphasizing that the focus should be on meeting security needs and advancing technology in weaponry. He reassured that India will continue to develop its defense capabilities independently, regardless of shifts in international relations, particularly between major powers like the US and Russia.
Implications of the 2026-27 Union Budget
Saraswat discussed the implications of the 2026-27 Union Budget, which allocates Rs 7.85 lakh crore for defense, a significant increase from the previous year’s Rs 6.81 lakh crore. He highlighted that this budget reflects a commitment to large-scale production of weapons and equipment necessary for future warfare. The allocation includes Rs 2,19,306 crore earmarked for capital expenditure, which will support the procurement of essential military hardware. He noted that the budget also emphasizes indigenization and encourages private sector participation to reduce costs and enhance production rates.
Building a Strong Startup Ecosystem
Saraswat praised the government’s initiatives to foster innovation within the defense sector, particularly through the establishment of government-backed ecosystems that support startups. He mentioned that the defense ministry, along with the departments of science and technology and biotechnology, is actively working to create a conducive environment for startups. These efforts are crucial for building a robust pipeline of innovative solutions in defense. He reiterated that while the startup culture is gaining momentum, it is vital for venture capitalists to step up their support to ensure these startups can thrive and contribute to India’s defense landscape.
