Understanding RBI’s New CAS Initiative: Monitor Fixed Deposits, Shares, and Mutual Funds Across Multiple Banks

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced significant changes to the Consolidated Account Statement (CAS) and the interoperability of account aggregators, aimed at enhancing investor convenience. Effective from December 31, 2026, these measures will enable SEBI-regulated depositories to incorporate bank deposit information into CAS. This initiative is expected to provide investors with a comprehensive view of their financial holdings, consolidating details of stocks, mutual funds, and now, bank deposits into a single statement.

Details of the Announcement

RBI’s recent statement outlines plans to implement interoperability among Non-Banking Financial Company Account Aggregators (NBFC-AAs). This change will allow customers to access and share their financial information across various Financial Information Providers through any NBFC-AA of their choice. Additionally, depositories regulated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India will be able to include bank deposit account information in the CAS, allowing demat account holders to view their holdings alongside bank deposits in one consolidated statement.

Currently, CAS consolidates transactions and holdings from demat accounts with the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) and Central Depository Services Limited (CDSL), as well as eligible mutual fund investments. The statement is linked to the investor’s PAN, making it easier to track various securities in one place. However, bank deposit details are not included in the current CAS.

Benefits for Investors

The integration of bank deposit information into CAS will simplify the investment tracking process for demat account holders. This change allows investors to view their total financial picture, including fixed deposits, in one place. Experts suggest that this could facilitate better financial management, enabling users to check details such as nominee status for fixed deposits, reconcile bank interest with tax documents, and identify any unfamiliar deposits.

The expected enhancements to CAS will display fixed deposit balances, bank names, and term-deposit details, while masking account numbers for privacy. This consolidation will apply to standard retail deposits across scheduled commercial banks, including fixed and recurring deposits. The RBI’s initiative aims to provide a clearer overview of an investor’s financial landscape.

Areas Requiring Clarification

While the implementation date is set for December 31, 2026, financial experts anticipate that more details will emerge regarding the processes involved and privacy protections. Questions remain about which specific deposits will be included, the level of detail provided, and whether balances across different banks will be consolidated.

Experts emphasize that while the new system will provide valuable information, it does not offer financial advice. The effectiveness of this initiative will depend on the cooperation of banks and aggregators, as well as the consent of customers regarding their data.
