US Stocks Decline Amid Rising Inflation; S&P 500 and Nasdaq Experience Notable Drops

Wall Street experienced a downturn on Wednesday, driven by unexpectedly high US inflation data that pushed Treasury yields upward. The S&P 500 fell by 1.1%, marking its fifth decline in six sessions since reaching a record high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average decreased by 171 points, or 0.3%, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.6% as of 1:14 PM Eastern time.

US consumer prices rose 3.7% year-on-year in September, up from 3.4% in August and surpassing economists’ expectations of 3.6%. This increase has heightened concerns about sustained inflation, particularly due to rising energy prices amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

The benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield rose to 5.23%, briefly exceeding 5.32% during the session. Higher yields can negatively impact equities by increasing borrowing costs and making bonds more appealing compared to stocks.

AI Investment Opportunities and Risks

Executives from major US banks discussed the potential and challenges of investing in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon expressed uncertainty regarding the long-term demand for capital and computing capacity within the AI ecosystem. He emphasized the importance of careful financing decisions and risk management.

Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser noted that investment in the broader AI ecosystem continues unabated, citing a persistent shortage of computing capacity. The expansion of AI infrastructure, fueled by significant investments in data centers and computing power, presents banks with opportunities to finance large-scale projects. However, high interest rates could increase project costs and complicate debt repayment.

Wells Fargo CEO Charlie Scharf characterized the AI buildout as a major economic force, highlighting both opportunities and risks due to the substantial borrowing involved. Banks are also utilizing AI internally to enhance productivity and cut costs, although the financial benefits vary. Fraser mentioned that Citi has developed products up to 40% faster using AI and has reduced technology vendor expenses by 30% through coding tools.

Investors are closely monitoring whether these efficiency gains can justify the heavy expenditures on AI. Concerns are also rising regarding cybersecurity threats and the risks associated with AI agents capable of autonomous actions. The combination of persistent inflation, elevated bond yields, and uncertainty over AI investment returns has compounded the challenges facing Wall Street.
