US Emergency Oil Stockpile Hits Record Low Amid Concerns

More than four decades after its establishment, the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) has reached its lowest level since 1983. Recent federal data reveals that the reserve now holds 340.3 million barrels of crude oil, following a release of 8.9 million barrels over the past week. This decline is attributed to ongoing withdrawals aimed at mitigating the economic effects of the war with Iran, a strategy initiated during the Trump administration.

Decline in Emergency Oil Stockpile

The SPR has been a critical tool for U.S. officials to combat rising energy prices affecting consumers and businesses. Since the onset of the conflict with Iran in late February, the reserve has decreased by 75 million barrels, representing an 18% drop. Currently, the stockpile is less than half full, raising concerns about its operational capacity.

Andy Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates, noted that the releases from the SPR, along with actions from other governments and reduced exports from China, have helped prevent oil prices from soaring to $150 per barrel. However, he warned that a major hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico could disrupt production and eliminate this buffer.

Political Implications and Future Concerns

The pace of oil withdrawals reflects a shift in policy under the Trump administration. During his 2022 presidential campaign, Trump criticized President Biden for utilizing the reserve ahead of the midterm elections. Now, Trump officials are accelerating releases from the SPR as the current elections approach.

Industry experts have raised alarms about the reserve’s operational constraints. Mike Sommers, CEO of the American Petroleum Institute, emphasized that the SPR must maintain at least 20% capacity to function effectively. He expressed growing concern over the current levels, stating, “We’re raising alarm bells right now.” The report indicates that the oil released since the conflict with Iran will need replenishment, but this is not anticipated before the peak of the hurricane season, leaving domestic energy supplies vulnerable to potential disruptions.
