US-China Tensions Resurface with Trade Relations in Jeopardy

China has condemned the United States for adding several prominent Chinese companies, including BYD, Alibaba, and Baidu, to a Pentagon list of firms allegedly linked to the Chinese military. This action, according to Chinese officials, undermines agreements made during last month’s summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The Pentagon’s decision could hinder these companies from securing U.S. defense contracts.

China’s Ministry of Commerce criticized the U.S. for disregarding the consensus reached by the two leaders, stating that the move harms bilateral economic and trade relations. The ministry emphasized that the U.S. has “disregarded the overall interests” of these relations and accused it of misusing national security concerns to unjustly suppress Chinese enterprises.

The inclusion of BYD, Alibaba, and Baidu on the Pentagon’s list follows Trump’s recent visit to Beijing, where he was accompanied by a delegation of high-profile U.S. business leaders. During the summit, both leaders agreed to enhance economic engagement, including discussions on China’s purchases of U.S. agricultural products and Boeing aircraft. Despite these efforts to stabilize ties, the Pentagon’s latest action reflects ongoing tensions between Washington and Beijing, particularly regarding security and technology issues.
