Urgent Call to Action for Sustainable Development

In a powerful video message delivered at the twelfth session of the Asia-Pacific Forum for Sustainable Development in Bangkok, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed emphasized the critical need for immediate action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. She highlighted that only 17% of global SDG targets are currently on track, with many facing stagnation or regression. Mohammed urged regional leaders to harness technology and collaborate to accelerate progress, particularly in the face of ongoing global crises that disproportionately affect vulnerable populations.

Critical Juncture for the Asia-Pacific Region

During her address, Amina Mohammed expressed gratitude to the Government of Thailand for hosting the forum and to Executive Secretary Ibu Armida Alisjahbana for facilitating the gathering. She underscored the importance of the next five years, stating that the actions taken during this period will significantly impact the future of the planet and its inhabitants. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is not merely a collection of goals; it represents a collective commitment to future generations. However, the current progress is alarming, with less than one-sixth of the SDG targets in the Asia-Pacific region expected to be met based on existing trends.

Despite economic growth lifting millions out of poverty, the benefits have not been evenly distributed, leaving many vulnerable populations at risk. Mohammed called for urgent action to realign efforts and ensure that the SDGs are back on track. She referenced the Pact for the Future, an agreement made by countries last year, which includes commitments aimed at accelerating sustainable development across the region.

Harnessing Technology for Sustainable Progress

The Asia-Pacific region possesses significant potential to advance SDG progress through technological innovation and collaboration. Mohammed pointed out that countries in the region are leaders in digital innovation and connectivity, with accessible emerging technologies that can transform financial inclusion and service delivery. Initiatives such as the Republic of Koreaโ€™s Digital New Deal and Thailandโ€™s Big Data Initiative exemplify how technology can drive sustainable development.

Moreover, the region is uniquely positioned to lead the global energy transition. Rapid deployment of clean energy and cross-border energy integration initiatives, such as the South Asian Hydropower Trade and the ASEAN Power Grid, are enhancing energy security while reducing emissions. Innovations in food systems, like regenerative agriculture in India, are also contributing to improved sustainability and food security. Mohammed emphasized that accelerating action requires regional collaboration, which can create new opportunities for economic resilience and social progress.

Strengthening Regional Collaboration and Support

To achieve the ambitious goals set forth in the 2030 Agenda, Mohammed stressed the importance of regional collaboration. A unified vision of sustainability and prosperity can lead to enhanced financial cooperation, improved cross-border connectivity, and integrated regional supply chains. The United Nations and the Regional Economic Commissions are committed to working closely with Resident Coordinators and UN country teams to bolster support for sustainable development initiatives across the region.

Efforts will focus on forging investment pathways, shaping policy and regulatory frameworks, and garnering support from various stakeholders, including multilateral and regional development banks and private investors. The strong connection between the Regional Economic Commissions and Resident Coordinators, established through reforms by Secretary-General Antรณnio Guterres, has been pivotal in aligning policy and operational resources effectively.

Seizing Opportunities for Action in 2023

As the deadline for the SDGs approaches, Mohammed urged all participants to capitalize on the opportunities available this year to accelerate action. Key upcoming events, including Beijing+30, the Fourth Conference on Financing for Development, the World Social Summit, the Fourth Food System Summit Stocktake, and COP30, present vital platforms for regional leaders to voice their needs and priorities. By doing so, they can ensure that sustainable development efforts leave no one behind and truly benefit all communities in the Asia-Pacific region.
