Union MoS Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh Heads Indian Delegation at IUCN World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi
In a significant move towards biodiversity conservation, India has launched its National Red List Roadmap at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi. Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh, emphasized the country’s commitment to safeguarding nature through a comprehensive framework aimed at assessing and monitoring the conservation status of various species. This initiative not only showcases India’s rich biodiversity but also aligns with global conservation standards.
India’s Vision for Biodiversity Conservation
During the inauguration, Minister Singh unveiled India’s Vision 2025–2030 for the National Red List Assessment (NRLA). This framework, developed by the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) and the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) in collaboration with IUCN-India and the Centre for Species Survival, aims to create a nationally coordinated and inclusive system for assessing species conservation status. Singh highlighted that this vision represents a roadmap for a science-based approach to biodiversity documentation and threat assessment, reinforcing India’s role as one of the world’s 17 megadiverse countries.
India is home to four of the 36 global biodiversity hotspots, including the Himalayas and the Western Ghats. Despite covering only 2.4% of the world’s land area, the country boasts nearly 8% of global flora and 7.5% of fauna, with a significant portion being endemic. The Minister pointed out that India’s robust legal frameworks, such as the Wild Life (Protection) Act of 1972, have been instrumental in protecting biodiversity, with recent amendments enhancing protections for species listed under CITES.
National Red List Assessment Initiative
The National Red List Assessment initiative is designed to fulfill India’s commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF). This initiative will establish a coordinated red-listing system that serves as a vital tool for accurate species assessment, conservation planning, and informed policy development. Singh stressed the importance of documenting traditional knowledge in biodiversity conservation, recognizing it as a crucial element in the overall effort.
The goal is to publish National Red Data Books for both flora and fauna by 2030, which will serve as a foundation for evidence-based conservation strategies and development planning. The Minister expressed confidence that India will achieve a comprehensive threat assessment of its native species by adhering to globally accepted guidelines set by the IUCN.
A Collaborative Effort in Conservation
The National Red List Assessment will be a pioneering national endeavor led by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), with ZSI and BSI as the nodal agencies. While some Asian countries have conducted similar assessments, India’s approach is distinguished by its comprehensive and collaborative nature. The initiative aims to unite leading taxonomists, conservation biologists, and subject experts under a coordinated framework to tackle this significant task.
At the core of this initiative is the precision of species identification, an area where ZSI and BSI excel. This effort will enhance collaboration among taxonomists, conservation scientists, and policymakers, ensuring that conservation decisions are grounded in sound scientific data. Singh reiterated that through this initiative, India reaffirms its commitment to biodiversity conservation and the global sustainability agenda.
Commitment to Global Sustainability
The National Red List Assessment represents a landmark step in India’s biodiversity conservation efforts, embodying a science-based, equitable, and people-centric approach. Minister Singh emphasized that through strong partnerships, rigorous data collection, and collective will, India aims to inspire and collaborate with the global community to protect shared natural heritage. This initiative not only highlights India’s rich biodiversity but also positions the country as a leader in global conservation efforts.
