Union Home Minister Amit Shah Launches ‘Run for Unity’ in New Delhi for Rashtriya Ekta Diwas 2025
Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the ‘Run for Unity’ event in New Delhi today, commemorating Rashtriya Ekta Diwas 2025. The event, which included the administration of the Unity Pledge, was attended by several dignitaries, including Union Ministers and the Chief Minister of Delhi. Shah emphasized the significance of the day, marking the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and highlighted Patel’s pivotal role in India’s independence and unity.
Celebrating Sardar Patel’s Legacy
During his address, Amit Shah underscored the importance of Sardar Patel, often referred to as the “Iron Man of India.” He noted that since 2014, the ‘Run for Unity’ has been organized annually on October 31 to honor Patel’s contributions. This year, the celebration is particularly special, coinciding with Patel’s 150th birth anniversary. Shah recounted Patel’s journey from a barrister to a key figure in the freedom struggle, emphasizing his leadership during the Bardoli Satyagraha of 1928. This movement, which began in a small town, evolved into a nationwide campaign for farmers’ rights, ultimately earning Patel the title “Sardar” from Mahatma Gandhi.
Unifying a Fragmented Nation
Shah reflected on the challenges faced by India post-independence, when the country was divided into 562 princely states. He praised Patel’s relentless efforts and statesmanship, which led to the unification of these states into a single nation. Shah highlighted regions like Kathiawar, Bhopal, and Hyderabad, which attempted to remain separate but were brought together under Patel’s leadership. He pointed out that while Kashmir’s full integration remained a challenge due to Article 370, Prime Minister Modi has addressed this issue, fulfilling Patel’s vision of a unified India.
The Statue of Unity: A Symbol of National Pride
Amit Shah also discussed the establishment of the Statue of Unity, a grand memorial dedicated to Sardar Patel. He noted that the idea for the statue emerged when Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, leading to its foundation stone being laid on October 31, 2013. Completed in just 57 months, the statue stands at 182 meters and symbolizes national unity. Shah mentioned that the statue was constructed using 25,000 tonnes of iron, sourced from melting farmers’ tools, further connecting Patel’s legacy to the agricultural community. The statue has attracted approximately 25 million visitors, reinforcing its status as a national landmark.
Continuing the Legacy of Unity
In his concluding remarks, Shah reiterated the importance of Sardar Patel’s vision for unity and internal security in India. He announced that the Ministry of Home Affairs plans to hold the Unity Parade annually as a tribute to Patel, starting this year. Special programs are being organized nationwide to promote Patel’s ideals, particularly among the youth. Shah emphasized that the young generation, by taking the Unity Pledge, will play a crucial role in shaping India’s future and preserving the nation’s integrity.
