UN Launches Urgent Call for Gender Equality

At a high-level event marking the launch of the Beijing+30 Action Agenda, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed emphasized the critical need for gender equality as the world approaches 2025. This year marks significant milestones, including the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Conference and the 25th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace, and security. Despite notable progress, challenges remain, and the UN is committed to ensuring that gender equality becomes a reality for all women and girls.
Celebrating Progress and Acknowledging Challenges
During her address, Amina Mohammed highlighted the remarkable achievements made since the Beijing Conference in 1995. She noted that more girls are attending school than ever before, and women are increasingly breaking barriers in various sectors, including politics and the workforce. Additionally, stronger laws addressing gender-based violence have been enacted, thanks to the relentless efforts of women and feminist movements worldwide.
However, Mohammed cautioned that this year also serves as a crucial call to action. Millions of women and girls continue to face severe challenges, including threats from armed conflicts, persistent gender inequality in political systems, and violence that often occurs in their own homes. These issues underscore the urgent need for collective action to address the ongoing struggles faced by women globally.
A Turning Point for Sustainable Development Goals
With only five years remaining to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Mohammed stressed that 2025 must be a turning point in the pursuit of gender equality. She emphasized that gender equality is not merely a matter of justice but is essential for unlocking broader progress on the SDGs and fostering lasting peace. The UN is dedicated to taking bold actions in collaboration with Member States and partners to create a future where gender equality is a lived reality for all.
Commitments to Gender Equality and Future Actions
The UN’s Gender Equality Acceleration Plan and the Clarion Call, announced by the Secretary-General, aim to transform the organization’s approach by placing gender equality at the forefront of all initiatives. Mohammed outlined the six priority actions of the Beijing+30 Action Agenda, which serve as a roadmap for integrating gender equality into global efforts across various sectors, including poverty eradication, digital transformation, and climate justice.
The Pact for the Future commits to ensuring that women are included in all aspects of sustainable development and peacebuilding. Mohammed urged all stakeholders to honor these commitments and work collaboratively to create lasting impacts. She concluded by calling for solidarity in building a future where gender equality is not just an aspiration but a reality for every woman and girl.
