UN Chief Urges Global Support for Rohingya Refugees

During a recent visit to Coxโ€™s Bazar, Bangladesh, UN Secretary-General Antรณnio Guterres emphasized the urgent need for international support for Rohingya refugees. Speaking at a Ramadan solidarity event, Guterres highlighted the resilience of the over one million Rohingya individuals who have fled persecution in Myanmar. He called for increased humanitarian assistance and a commitment to ensuring their safe return home.

Solidarity with Rohingya Refugees

Antรณnio Guterres arrived in Coxโ€™s Bazar to express solidarity with the Rohingya refugees and the Bangladeshi communities hosting them. His visit coincided with the holy month of Ramadan, a time of reflection and community. Guterres participated in an Iftar meal, underscoring his respect for the culture and faith of the Rohingya people. He stated, โ€œI am here to shine a global spotlight on the plight โ€” but also the potential of Rohingya refugees.โ€

Guterres recounted the harrowing history of the Rohingya, who have faced decades of discrimination and violence, culminating in a mass exodus from Myanmar eight years ago. Many refugees continue to arrive, fleeing ongoing human rights violations and anti-Muslim sentiment. He noted that the Rohingya seek what everyone desires: protection, dignity, and safety for their families.

Call for Action and Support

In his remarks, Guterres issued a clear message to all parties involved in the Myanmar conflict: prioritize civilian protection and prevent further violence. He stressed that the resolution to the crisis lies in creating conditions for the Rohingya to return home safely and voluntarily. However, he acknowledged the dire situation in Myanmar, particularly in Rakhine state, where systematic persecution persists.

Guterres warned of an impending humanitarian crisis due to cuts in financial assistance from several countries, which could drastically reduce food rations for Rohingya refugees. He described this potential reduction as an โ€œunmitigated disasterโ€ that could lead to suffering and loss of life. He urged the international community to recognize its obligation to support the Rohingya and ensure that their basic needs are met.

Challenges and the Path Forward

While acknowledging improvements in the refugee camps since his last visit in 2018, Guterres highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by both refugees and host communities. The camps are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including extreme heat, floods, and landslides, which threaten lives and livelihoods. Beyond food aid, he emphasized the need for education and opportunities for independence, as some families resort to dangerous sea journeys in search of a better life.

Guterres reiterated that the international community must not reduce support during Ramadan, a month symbolizing solidarity. He called for immediate action to ensure that aid continues to reach the Rohingya, stating, โ€œCoxโ€™s Bazar is ground zero for the impact of budget cuts on people in desperate need.โ€ He concluded with a commitment to advocate for the Rohingya until conditions allow for their safe and dignified return to Myanmar. โ€œRamadan Kareem,โ€ he added, emphasizing the importance of compassion and support during this sacred time.
