UIDAI Honors Top Innovators in Biometric SDK Challenges

On Monday, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) celebrated the innovators in biometric technology by announcing the winners of its Biometric SDK Benchmarking Challenges focused on face and iris recognition. This initiative, created in partnership with the International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT Hyderabad), aims to enhance biometric matching solutions and support the development of indigenous technologies.

The latest challenges, which followed the successful fingerprint competition, took place between December 2025 and February 2026 and attracted significant interest from various technology providers and research institutions. A total of 531 registrations were received for the Face and Iris Age Variance Challenges, highlighting the growing enthusiasm in the biometric field.

Winners of the Biometric Challenges

After a rigorous evaluation process involving extensive performance tests, Innovatrics from Slovakia emerged as the top performer in the Face Challenge. IDBio from the United States and Neurotechnology from Lithuania claimed the second and third positions, respectively. In the Iris Challenge, IDBio excelled again, taking first place, followed closely by Neurotechnology and Innovatrics.

Encouraging Participation and Future Innovations

The challenges not only saw participation from international firms but also included several Indian startups and academic institutions such as Perfios, Ooru, and IIIT Hyderabad. This diversity reflects UIDAI’s aim to foster innovation within the local biometric ecosystem.

The assessment process incorporated large, anonymized datasets in a controlled environment, a distinctive approach that utilized long-term biometric data from children aged 5 to 10 years. Each sample had a 5-year gap, allowing participants to test the effectiveness of their verification systems across various age stages. This aspect of the challenge is unprecedented globally as it addresses the biometric identity of children as they grow.

Looking Ahead

By rewarding the top participants and applauding all competitors for their hard work, UIDAI is propelling the biometric technology landscape forward. This initiative is a crucial step in identifying high-performing matching solutions and encourages continuous innovation in the sector.
