Tripura Hosts International Organic Buyer-Seller Meet
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), alongside the Tripura State Organic Farming Development Agency (TSOFDA) and the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, recently organized an International Organic Buyer-Seller Meet in Agartala, Tripura. This event aimed to connect local organic producers, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), exporters, and international buyers, creating a platform for exploring new business opportunities and building long-term market linkages.
Approximately 200 participants attended the meet, which included over 20 international buyers from countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Italy, Greece, and Argentina. The event also featured 27 exporters and 96 farmers from 22 FPOs/FPCs, as well as officials from various governmental departments. The wide-ranging participation facilitated direct interactions among farmers, producer organizations, exporters, government stakeholders, and international buyers, allowing fruitful discussions on sourcing opportunities, market requirements, and potential business collaborations.
Showcasing Tripura’s Organic Offerings
The event showcased 12 well-curated stalls, highlighting the diverse organic products from Tripura. Among the offerings were the famed Queen Pineapple, GI-tagged Kalikhasa Rice, organic ginger and turmeric, black sesame, jackfruits, scented lemons, and other unique organic produce. These stalls provided international buyers with an opportunity to engage with producers, examine product displays, and discuss potential sourcing and business ventures.
Promoting Sustainable Agriculture
The International Organic Buyer-Seller Meet served as a significant platform for commercial engagement between Tripura’s organic producers and buyers from around the world. This initiative not only aims to promote the state’s organic identity in global markets but is also expected to forge new business linkages, encourage long-term sourcing partnerships, and enhance market access for local farmers, ultimately improving their income opportunities.
Attending the event was Shri Ratan Lal Nath, Agriculture Minister of Tripura, along with Shri Apurba Roy, Secretary of Agriculture & Horticulture, and Ms. Jennifer Chang, Executive Director of IFOAM Organics Asia. They shared insights on the importance of enhancing the organic sector and expanding market opportunities for producers.
Minister Nath commended the initiative to elevate Tripura’s organic products in international markets, emphasizing the importance of creating robust market linkages for organic farmers and producer groups. He stated, “Tripura’s farmers are producing quality organic products with strong potential in domestic and international markets. Connecting our farmers and FPOs directly with international buyers can create new opportunities for better market access and income generation. The Government of Tripura will continue to support initiatives that strengthen organic farming and enable our farmers to benefit from emerging global opportunities.”
Recognizing Organic Farmers
The event also included a ceremonial recognition of organic farmers for their vital contributions to the state’s organic agriculture movement and efforts to build sustainable agricultural value chains. APEDA continues to collaborate with state governments, FPOs, exporters, and other stakeholders to enhance India’s organic export framework through support in areas such as certification, capacity building, infrastructure development, market promotion, and facilitating international buyer connections. These initiatives in Tripura are part of a larger strategy to expand the global reach of India’s organic products and create sustainable opportunities for farmers in the northeastern region.
