Three Companies Secured Satellite Communication Licenses in India

In a significant development for satellite-based communications in India, the Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, revealed in a recent Rajya Sabha session that several companies have sought the government’s approval for Unified Licenses to operate Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) services. This initiative aims to enhance connectivity, especially in rural and underserved regions of the country.

Over the past five years, companies such as Nelco Limited, Yotta Network Services Private Limited, OneWeb India Communications Private Limited, JIO Satellite Communications Limited, Starlink Satellite Communications Private Limited, Amazon Kuiper Services India Private Limited, and Connect4sure Technologies Private Limited have submitted applications to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). These applications were aimed at providing essential satellite services nationwide, including the state of Gujarat.

After reviewing these submissions, the DoT has granted Unified Licenses specifically for GMPCS services to three prominent entities: OneWeb India Communications Private Limited, JIO Satellite Communications Limited, and Starlink Satellite Communications Private Limited. Meanwhile, applications from Nelco Limited and Yotta Network Services Private Limited were rejected, and Connect4sure Technologies Private Limited subsequently withdrew its application. Amazon Kuiper Services India Private Limited’s application is still under consideration.

The push for satellite-based communication services is particularly crucial for reaching remote areas that lack conventional connectivity options like optical fiber and microwave. These services are expected to improve connectivity in challenging regions such as rural communities, coastal zones, border areas, and mountainous terrain, where traditional infrastructure may struggle.

Under the terms of the Unified License, the successful licensees are expected to deliver satellite communication services fairly and without discrimination to all applicants within their service areas. This initiative is a strategic move to bridge the digital divide and solve last-mile connectivity challenges, ensuring equitable access to digital services for all users across the nation.

As India continues to enhance its digital landscape, these developments in satellite communication may play a vital role in promoting inclusivity and strengthening the country’s connectivity framework.
