Three Cheetah Cubs Born at Kuno National Park
In a delightful milestone for wildlife conservation in India, Kuno National Park has celebrated the arrival of three cheetah cubs, as announced by Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav. The cubs were born to Gamini, a South African cheetah who is experiencing motherhood for the second time, marking a special occasion coinciding with the third anniversary of cheetahs’ arrival from South Africa to India.
A Historic Birth
Shri Yadav shared the news through a social media post, expressing his excitement over the new cubs. He referred to the event as a “roaring new chapter” at Kuno, emphasizing its significance in the broader narrative of cheetah conservation in the country. The birth of these cubs brings the total number of surviving Indian-born cheetah cubs to 27, increasing India’s total cheetah population to 38.
Progress in Project Cheetah
This latest birth marks the ninth successful litter of cheetahs in India since the project began. The project aims to reintroduce cheetahs to their indigenous habitat in India, where they had been absent for decades. Every successful birth strengthens the ongoing efforts of Project Cheetah and highlights the dedication of both field staff and veterinary teams involved in the initiative.
Minister’s Pride
In his announcement, the Minister expressed pride for both Kuno National Park and India, wishing the best for Gamini and her three cubs. “May Gamini and her three little sprinters grow strong and carry the nation’s cheetah revival story forward with speed and grace,” stated Shri Yadav.
International Collaboration
This achievement is part of a groundbreaking conservation effort, which began with the historic translocation of 20 cheetahs from Namibia and South Africa to India during 2022-23. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi facilitated the release of the first eight cheetahs on September 17, 2022, marking a significant step towards restoring the population of this majestic species in their natural habitat.
The successful birth of these cubs not only signifies a win for conservation efforts but also brings hope for the future of cheetah populations in the wild. The Indian government remains committed to the objectives of Project Cheetah, striving to nurture and protect these incredible animals.
