Threads to Introduce Gaming Features in Private Messaging: Report

Meta is exploring a new feature for its messaging platform, Threads, that could allow users to engage in games while chatting in private conversations. The company is currently testing a basketball game, which aims to enhance user interaction and introduce a competitive element to messaging. Although the feature is still in the prototype phase and not available to the public, it represents a significant step in making digital conversations more dynamic and entertaining.

Introducing In-Chat Gaming

Meta has confirmed that it is developing a gaming feature for private chats on Threads, starting with a basketball game. This initiative was revealed through the efforts of reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, who discovered an image showcasing the game within a chat window. The basketball game allows users to score points by swiping on their screens to throw a virtual ball into a hoop. This interactive format encourages users to take turns and compare scores, fostering a light-hearted competitive atmosphere during their conversations.

If Meta successfully implements this feature, Threads could distinguish itself from competitors like X and Bluesky, which currently do not offer integrated gaming options within their messaging platforms. Additionally, this feature could align Threads more closely with Apple’s Messages app, which supports casual gaming through third-party applications like GamePigeon. However, Meta has not provided a timeline for when or if this feature will be made available to users outside of internal testing.

Previous Gaming Experiments by Meta

This is not the first time Meta has ventured into gaming within its messaging services. Last year, Instagram introduced a hidden game in direct messages, where users could control a paddle to keep an emoji bouncing on the screen. This game allowed players to compete for higher scores, adding a playful twist to their private chats. The introduction of the basketball game prototype reflects Meta’s ongoing efforts to enhance user engagement on Threads.

In addition to gaming, Meta has been actively expanding Threads with new features aimed at increasing user activity. Recently, the platform has added more topics to its Communities feature, which is seen as a strategy to compete with discussion-centric platforms like Reddit and X. Threads has also rolled out disappearing posts, which automatically remove content from public view after 24 hours. These enhancements indicate Meta’s commitment to making Threads a more engaging platform for its users.

Threads’ User Base and Market Position

Threads has reportedly amassed around 400 million monthly users globally, but its penetration in the U.S. market remains limited. A recent report from the Pew Research Center revealed that only 8 percent of U.S. adults have used Threads, compared to 21 percent for X and 4 percent for Bluesky. This disparity highlights the challenges Threads faces in gaining a foothold in a competitive social media landscape.

Meta’s initiative to test new features like in-chat gaming underscores its determination to narrow this gap and enhance user experience. By introducing interactive elements, the company hopes to attract more users and encourage existing ones to spend more time on the platform. As the gaming feature progresses through testing, it will be interesting to see how it impacts user engagement and Threads’ overall growth in the coming months.
