Telangana Launches Innovative 100-Day Action Plan for Urban Sanitation

Telangana is making significant strides in enhancing urban sanitation through the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0 (SBM-U 2.0). The state has introduced a focused 100-Day Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign that actively engages citizens in promoting cleanliness, public health, and sustainable practices. This initiative showcases the collaborative effort of communities and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to achieve measurable improvements in sanitation.

Transforming Urban Cleanliness

The Swachh Bharat Mission, recognized as the world’s largest behavior change initiative in sanitation, is further strengthened by SBM-U 2.0. The campaign emphasizes improving citizens’ attitudes towards responsible waste management. Various IEC interventions have been integral in raising awareness, changing mindsets, and nurturing pride among urban dwellers towards cleanliness. The visible results include cleaner streets, revitalized public spaces, and a noticeable reduction in areas previously plagued by garbage.

Community Engagement and Campaign Launch

On June 2, 2025, Telangana launched the 100-Day Action Plan, which lasts until September 10, 2025. This campaign was initiated with a public mobilization drive that drew the participation of 36,900 community members in rallies stretching over 250 kilometers. This demonstrated a robust community commitment to the cleanliness movement right from the outset.

Door-to-Door Awareness and Environmental Initiatives

A key aspect of the campaign is a door-to-door sensitization drive, which has reached 27.09 lakh households across urban areas in Telangana. The focus is on promoting source segregation of waste and home composting—crucial steps for effective waste management aligned with SBM-U 2.0.

In line with environmental goals, the campaign includes the ‘Amrut Mitra – Women for Trees’ initiative, resulting in the planting of 24,708 saplings, actively involving 10,704 women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs). On World Environment Day, 13,488 citizens participated in rallies covering 113 kilometers, emphasizing Telangana’s commitment to sustainable practices.

Supporting Sanitation Workers

The campaign also prioritizes the health and welfare of frontline sanitation workers. Over 25,386 sanitation staff participated in health camps offering medical check-ups and support services, reflecting the state’s dedication to their well-being.

Urban Infrastructure and Public Health Initiatives

Efforts to maintain urban infrastructure include cleaning 18,351 kilometers of stormwater drains to reduce flooding risks and combat waterborne diseases. The campaign also reached an impressive 15,02,819 homes with awareness on seasonal disease prevention and cleaned 621 overhead drinking water tanks, ensuring safe water access for residents.

Empowering Women and Strengthening Local Economies

The campaign intersects with livelihood and women’s empowerment by disbursing ₹1,045.04 crore in loans to 8,546 SHGs, enhancing the financial strength of women-led enterprises. These groups showcased their products at local festivals, generating sales of ₹77.12 lakhs, linking Swachhata initiatives to economic empowerment.

Looking Ahead

This structured and outcome-oriented campaign stands as a model of effective citizen engagement under SBM-U 2.0. Building on this momentum, Telangana is rolling out a focused 99 Days Action Plan from March to June 2026, aiming to deepen behavioral change and enhance service delivery in sanitation and public health. Targeted initiatives will include further awareness programs on effective waste management practices and increased citizen involvement in creating cleaner, healthier urban spaces.
