Telangana Boosts Fisheries Development with PMMSY Support
The Government of India, through the Department of Fisheries (DoF) under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, has been implementing the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) in Telangana since the 2020-21 fiscal year. With a total project cost of ₹196.80 crore, which includes a central share of ₹68.14 crore, this initiative aims to evolve the fisheries and aquaculture sectors significantly in the state.
Recently, the Government of Telangana announced that a staggering 454,432 beneficiaries from all 33 districts have been positively impacted by this scheme. The PMMSY has set ambitious goals such as increasing production and productivity while simultaneously reducing input costs for local fishermen and aquaculturists.
Key Developments Under PMMSY
As part of the approved activities, several important projects have been initiated in Telangana. These include the establishment of 21 new freshwater finfish hatcheries, development of 824 hectares of grow-out ponds, and the stocking of fingerlings over an impressive 1.4 lakh hectares of reservoirs. The initiative also sees the creation of 11 Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS) units and 89 cage culture units to boost fish farming in local reservoirs.
To further enhance market facilitation, the DoF has green-lighted the establishment of a modern wholesale fish market in Hyderabad, alongside the setup of 185 fish kiosks across the state. Additional provisions include live fish vending centers, insulated transport vehicles, and specialized motorcycles equipped with ice boxes for smooth distribution.
Infrastructure Advancements and Future Prospects
The Government of India has also laid a focus on enhancing murrel production by notifying a dedicated production and processing cluster in Mancherial District. This initiative intends to improve productivity while strengthening market connectivity for local fish producers.
Year-wise funding details released for the last three years under PMMSY highlight increased support for Telangana’s fisheries infrastructure, with significant grants allocated to diverse projects aimed at fostering growth in the sector. The total grants disbursed amount to ₹1,334.54 lakh, with various infrastructure projects underway across numerous districts.
The future of fisheries in Telangana looks promising, as ongoing and upcoming initiatives seek to integrate sustainable practices and begin to reshape the local aquaculture landscape.
Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Minister Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh, also known as Lalan Singh, provided this information in the Lok Sabha, confirming the government’s commitment to enhancing the livelihoods of communities dependant on fisheries.
