Srinagar Airport Expansion: Cabinet Approves Major Upgrade for Civil Enclave
The Union Cabinet has given the green light for a significant development project at Srinagar International Airport, approving a new civil enclave with an estimated budget of Rs 1,677 crore. This initiative aims to bolster aviation infrastructure and improve connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir. The project, which received clearance from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will see the construction of a modern passenger terminal and supporting facilities at the airport, located approximately 12 kilometers from Srinagar city.
Project Overview and Features
The new civil enclave will span 73.18 acres and include a state-of-the-art terminal building covering 71,500 square meters, which integrates 20,659 square meters of existing structures. Designed to accommodate 2,900 passengers during peak hours, the terminal will have an annual capacity of 10 million passengers. The expansion will also feature an enlarged apron with the capability to park 15 aircraft, including one widebody (Code E) aircraft, with nine existing bays and six newly proposed ones. The airport’s runway, measuring 3,658 meters, will remain under the operation of the Indian Air Force. Additionally, a multi-level car parking facility for 1,000 vehicles will be constructed as part of this ambitious project.

The architectural design of the new terminal aims to harmonize modern infrastructure with the rich cultural heritage of Kashmir. It will incorporate traditional design elements, such as intricate woodwork and locally inspired craftsmanship, while ensuring efficient passenger processing through upgraded lounges, check-in zones, and advanced security systems. Sustainability is a core focus of the project, featuring advanced water harvesting systems, maximized natural lighting to reduce energy consumption, and the use of locally sourced eco-friendly materials. The development is expected to achieve a 5-star GRIHA rating, reflecting its commitment to environmental sustainability.

The government anticipates that the enhanced airport infrastructure will significantly improve connectivity to major tourist attractions in the region, including Dal Lake, Shankaracharya Temple, and the Mughal Gardens.
