NSE IPO Subscription Update: National Stock Exchange’s Offer Achieves 42% Subscription on Opening Day
The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) launched its Rs 225.69 billion ($2.3 billion) initial public offering (IPO) on Thursday, marking one of the largest IPOs in the country. On its first day of bidding, the offering received a subscription rate of 42%, with investors bidding for 37 million shares against the 88.6 million shares available. The IPO will remain open until September 21, with a listing date set for September 24.
Subscription Details
Retail investors subscribed to 42% of their allotted portion, while non-institutional investors showed a stronger interest, subscribing to 70%. Qualified institutional buyers, however, only subscribed to 19% of the shares available to them. Analysts suggest that initial subscription figures may not reflect the final outcome, as interest from institutional buyers typically increases in the later stages of the bidding period.
Market Context
The NSE’s IPO comes at a time when the primary market is witnessing multiple major issuers, including Jio Platforms, backed by billionaire Mukesh Ambani. The NSE offering is structured as an offer-for-sale by existing shareholders. Ahead of the IPO, the exchange allocated shares worth $703.04 million to notable domestic and global investors, including the sovereign wealth funds of Norway and Abu Dhabi.
Valuation and Market Share
The NSE is targeting a valuation of up to $46 billion, which is 15% to 20% lower than the levels indicated during its pre-IPO roadshows. This adjustment in valuation is attributed to a slowdown in options trading activity. Analysts at Ventura Securities noted that the exchange has been losing market share in index options to its rival, BSE. Additionally, analysts at Choice Broking pointed out that a higher transaction tax set to take effect in April 2026 could further impact trading volumes.
