Secretary-General Calls for People-Centred Investment in Grids and End to Fossil Fuel Subsidies at Energy Round Table

The global energy landscape is undergoing a rapid transformation, according to UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the Energy Transition Roundtable during COP30 in Belém. He highlighted that last year, renewable energy sources accounted for 90% of new power capacity, with investments in clean energy reaching a staggering $2 trillion—$800 billion more than fossil fuels. Guterres emphasized the urgent need for a swift transition to renewable energy, advocating for equitable benefits across all nations while warning that current commitments may still lead to dangerous levels of global warming.

Renewables Leading the Charge

Guterres pointed out that the renewables revolution is not just a trend; it is a necessity for global prosperity. He noted that every dollar invested in renewable energy generates three times more jobs compared to fossil fuel investments. Currently, clean energy jobs outnumber those in fossil fuels worldwide, showcasing the potential for economic growth in this sector. However, he stressed that while progress is being made, the pace must accelerate to ensure that all nations can share in the benefits of this transition. The recent agreements made at COP28 to phase out fossil fuels and significantly increase renewable energy capacity by 2030 are steps in the right direction, but Guterres warned that the world is still on a trajectory toward over 2°C of warming if current commitments are not fully realized.

The Urgency of Action

The UN Secretary-General highlighted the alarming reality that scientists predict an overshoot of the 1.5°C target is now inevitable, potentially starting as early as the early 2030s. He stated that to mitigate the impacts of climate change, global emissions must be cut nearly in half by 2030, reach net-zero by 2050, and eventually go net negative. Guterres outlined a clear mandate for action, urging nations to align their laws, policies, and incentives with a just energy transition. He called for the elimination of fossil fuel subsidies that hinder progress and emphasized the need to place people and equity at the center of this transition.

Investing in Infrastructure and Technology

To support the growing demand for renewable energy, Guterres stressed the importance of investing in infrastructure, such as energy grids and storage solutions. As renewable energy sources surge, the necessary infrastructure must keep pace to ensure reliability and efficiency. He also pointed out the need for clean power to meet new electricity demands, particularly from sectors like artificial intelligence, which are rapidly expanding. Guterres urged that technology should be leveraged as a solution rather than a burden, highlighting the need for innovative approaches to energy management.

Global Cooperation for a Sustainable Future

Guterres called for increased financial support for developing countries, which currently receive only 2% of global clean energy investments. He emphasized the importance of international cooperation to dismantle barriers, reduce capital costs, and attract private investment. The pathways to a net-zero world may differ by country, but the ultimate goal remains the same. He urged stronger collaboration, investment, and technology transfer to help developing nations transition away from fossil fuels. Guterres concluded by advocating for a fair, fast, and final transition to clean energy, framing climate action as an opportunity for development that benefits all.
