Rural Demand Surge: How the Countryside is Fueling India’s Consumption Recovery

Rural India is leading the charge in the country’s consumption recovery, surpassing urban markets despite recent government initiatives aimed at boosting spending in cities. According to a new report from Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd. (MOFSL), rural consumption surged by 7.7% year-on-year in the second quarter of FY26, marking the highest growth in 17 quarters. The report highlights that while urban consumption remains subdued, various factors are propelling rural spending, indicating a significant shift in economic dynamics.

Rural Consumption Outpaces Urban Markets

The latest ECOSCOPE report from MOFSL reveals that rural consumption is outpacing urban consumption, even in the wake of income tax cuts and GST reforms designed to stimulate city-based spending. The 7.7% increase in rural consumption is attributed to several supportive factors, including rising agricultural and non-agricultural wages, robust farm credit, and increased sales of tractors and fertilizers. Additionally, improved rainfall distribution and stable minimum support prices (MSPs) have contributed to this positive trend. Easing input costs have further bolstered farm incomes, enhancing the spending power of rural households.

In contrast, urban consumption has shown signs of weakness as the festive season approaches. Despite this, indicators such as personal credit expansion, petrol consumption, and non-farm imports suggest that discretionary spending remains resilient. However, passenger traffic has remained largely flat, indicating a mixed recovery in urban markets.

Mixed Recovery in Urban Consumption

While rural markets are thriving, urban consumption has been less robust. The MOFSL report indicates that urban demand is expected to gain momentum in the third quarter of FY26, driven by the implementation of GST reforms and recent price reductions. Channel checks conducted by the brokerage show a varied recovery across retail categories. For instance, sectors like automobiles and jewelry have seen improvements, while others, including footwear, paints, FMCG, and textiles, have experienced uneven trends.

Within the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector, general trade demand remained stable in October. However, MOFSL noted that alternative retail formats could lead to divergent growth patterns among firms in the coming months. The report also highlights strong high-frequency indicators for October, such as e-way bill generation, petrol usage, mall footfalls, and PMI readings, which signal sustained consumption momentum across various sectors.

Outlook for Rural and Urban Demand

Looking ahead, MOFSL anticipates that rural demand will continue its strong growth trajectory, supported by higher real wages, favorable rabi crop prospects, and controlled inflation. The report suggests that urban consumption is likely to strengthen during the festive quarter, particularly in discretionary categories like jewelry.

The brokerage has maintained its baseline projection for real GDP growth at 6.8% for FY26, with nominal growth estimated at 9%. Furthermore, easing tariff-related uncertainties could potentially enhance real GDP growth by an additional 20 to 30 basis points. This outlook underscores the contrasting dynamics between rural and urban markets, highlighting the resilience of rural consumption amidst broader economic challenges.
