Richard Simmons: Fitness Pioneer and Television Icon

Richard Simmons (July 12, 1948 – July 13, 2024) was an American fitness instructor and television personality. He pioneered weight-loss programs through his television show The Richard Simmons Show and the wildly popular Sweatin’ to the Oldies aerobics video series.

Early Life and Education

Born Milton Teagle Simmons in New Orleans on July 12, 1948, he was the son of Leonard Douglas Simmons Sr. and Shirley May Satin. His father worked as a master of ceremonies and later in thrift stores; his mother was a Russian Jewish traveling fan dancer who later sold cosmetics. Simmons grew up in the French Quarter and had an older brother, Leonard Jr. He became a practicing Catholic during adolescence and attended Cor Jesu High School in New Orleans before studying at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and graduating from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Arts in art.

Simmons struggled with weight from early childhood, beginning to overeat by age four and weighing 182 pounds by fifteen. As a young art student, he appeared in Fellini films Satyricon (1968) and The Clowns (1970), eventually reaching a peak weight of 268 pounds. He adopted the name Richard after an uncle who paid for his college tuition. His first job was selling pralines at Leah’s Pralines in New Orleans as a child.

Career and Achievements

After moving to Los Angeles in the 1970s, Simmons worked as a waiter and maître d’hôtel at Derek’s Second Floor restaurant in Beverly Hills. A television producer offered him a role on General Hospital, where he portrayed himself over four years. Recognizing that exercise studios catered only to already-fit customers, he developed a vision for fitness accessible to those starting from an unhealthy state.

At age 26, Simmons opened his own exercise studio originally called The Anatomy Asylum, which featured a salad bar restaurant called Ruffage. The studio was later renamed Slimmons and relocated to Beverly Hills, where Simmons taught motivational classes and aerobics. He lost 123 pounds through his fitness regimen. His success led to his own television series, The Richard Simmons Show, which aired from 1980 to 1984 and earned him multiple Emmy awards.

The 1980s aerobics boom amplified Simmons’s reach through his fitness video line, particularly Sweatin’ to the Oldies, which became one of the decade’s most popular videos. By 2010, Simmons reported maintaining a 100-plus pound weight loss for 42 years and claimed to have helped humanity lose approximately 12 million pounds over his 35-year fitness career.

Notable Events and Milestones

Simmons first gained widespread attention on the television program Real People, where he was shown working with his health club clients. He made guest appearances on numerous game shows and talk programs, including Super Password, Win, Lose or Draw, Hollywood Squares, and Figure It Out. He portrayed himself in an episode of Amazing Stories titled “Remote Control Man.”

On November 18, 1997, Simmons appeared on The Rosie O’Donnell Show alongside Celine Dion. A notable incident occurred on November 22, 2000, when Simmons, dressed as a turkey on Late Show with David Letterman, attempted to hug or kiss Letterman, who responded by spraying him with a fire extinguisher, triggering a severe asthma attack. Simmons did not return to the Letterman show for six years, eventually reappearing on November 29, 2006. He was a frequent guest on The Howard Stern Show, with his final appearance in 2013.

In 2008, Simmons engaged in political activism by supporting a bill mandating non-competitive physical education in public schools as part of the No Child Left Behind Act.
