Record $73 Billion Surge in Forex Inflows Thanks to RBI Initiative

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has reported an astonishing response to its special USD-INR forex swap facility, designed to support Foreign Currency Non-Resident (FCNR(B)) deposits, Overseas Foreign Currency Borrowings (OFCB), and External Commercial Borrowings (ECB). Launched on June 8, 2026, this initiative has brought in a remarkable total of $73 billion in foreign exchange inflows as of August 21, 2026. Impressively, FCNR(B) deposits alone have contributed $65.40 billion, reflecting the strong engagement from Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).

NRIs Show Unwavering Confidence

The success of this scheme highlights the robust connection of the Indian diaspora to their home country. NRIs have demonstrated their unwavering confidence in the Indian banking system and have shown their commitment to India’s growth story by rapidly channeling their savings into FCNR(B) deposits. This flow of capital has consistently exceeded expectations, indicating a renewed trust and participation in India’s economic advancement.

Historical Achievement

Reaching $73 billion in less than eleven weeks, with still a week remaining, marks this initiative as the largest and quickest foreign currency mobilization effort ever undertaken by India. This accomplishment far outpaces the RBI’s 2013 FCNR(B) swap scheme, which garnered around $26 billion over a three-month period. In response to the overwhelming reception, the RBI has chosen to close the FCNR(B) window earlier than scheduled, moving the deadline from September 30 to August 31, 2026, having met their objectives well ahead of time.

Strengthening Economic Foundations

By securing substantial long-term deposits and commercial funding from non-residents, the Government of India has effectively reinforced its external financial buffers with remarkable cost efficiency. This extraordinary response is indicative of the Indian economy’s resilience under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Despite facing unprecedented challenges globally, India continues to show robust growth and adaptability.
