Railways Introduces Revised Fare Structure Effective December 2025

The Indian Railways has announced a new fare structure that will take effect on **26 December 2025**. The aim of this reform is to ensure a balance between affordability for passengers and the financial sustainability of railway operations. Under the revised fare system, the fares for **suburban services** and **Season Tickets** will remain unchanged, benefitting daily commuters who rely on these routes. For **ordinary non-AC services**, the fare adjustments have been structured progressively across different classes of travel, namely **Second Class Ordinary, Sleeper Class Ordinary, and First Class Ordinary**.

Gradual Fare Increases for Ordinary Services

In the **Second Class Ordinary** category, no fare hikes will affect journeys up to **215 km**, allowing short-distance and daily travelers to continue their commutes without additional costs. For distances ranging from **216 km to 750 km**, passengers will see a slight increase of **₹5**. For longer journeys, the increase will apply in increments: **₹10** for distances between **751 km and 1250 km**, **₹15** for travel between **1251 km and 1750 km**, and **₹20** for distances from **1751 km to 2250 km**.

Fare revisions have also been uniformly applied to **Sleeper Class Ordinary** and **First Class Ordinary** services, with a modest increase of **1 paise per kilometre** for non-suburban routes. Additionally, passengers on **Mail and Express trains** will experience an increase of **2 paise per kilometre** across both Non-AC and AC classes, which includes categories such as Sleeper Class, First Class, and various AC tiers. For example, travelers on a **500 km non-AC Mail/Express journey** will incur only about **₹10 extra**.

Class-wise Adjustments and Final Notes

The basic fare adjustments apply to major train services such as Tejas, Rajdhani, and Vande Bharat, among others, and have been executed uniformly across applicable classes. Importantly, there will be no changes to reservation fees, superfast surcharges, or any ancillary charges. Existing rules regarding the Goods and Services Tax (GST) will also remain unchanged.

It’s essential to note that the revised fares will apply exclusively to tickets booked on or after **26 December 2025**. Passengers who purchase tickets before this date won’t face any additional charges even if their travel occurs post-implementation. Furthermore, fare lists at railway stations will be updated to reflect the new pricing from the effective date.
