The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare has announced encouraging figures for the rabi crop area coverage as of January 16, 2026. Notable increases have been recorded in several crops compared to the previous agricultural year, with wheat and oilseeds leading the way in area sown.

Wheat and Rice Lead the Pack

The normal area for wheat was noted at 312.35 lakh hectares, indicating a robust agriculture season.

Similarly, rice has shown substantial progress, with 25.58 lakh hectares currently sown, an increase of 4.61 lakh hectares compared to the previous year. The final area for rice last year stood at 44.73 lakh hectares.

Pulses and Coarse Cereals Developments

Notably, lentils have also seen an increase to 18.12 lakh hectares. However, certain pulses such as fieldpea and kulthi experienced a decrease in acreage.

On the other hand, coarse cereals, including jowar, maize, and barley, have shown resilience with a total area of 58.72 lakh hectares planted, up by 2.79 lakh hectares from the previous season. Maize has significantly contributed to this increase, occupying 27.55 lakh hectares this year.

Oilseeds on the Rise

Oilseed production is also witnessing growth, with a total cropped area of 96.86 lakh hectares. Rapeseed and mustard leading this category, collectively covering 89.36 lakh hectares, reflecting a rise of 2.79 lakh hectares compared to last year’s figures. This surge in oilseed coverage is a promising development for the agricultural economy.

Overall Rabi Crop Statistics

In total, the cumulative area for all rabi crops as of January 2026 stands at 652.33 lakh hectares, surpassing the prior year’s data and showing an overall increase of 20.88 lakh hectares. This positive trend not only showcases the effectiveness of agricultural practices but also reflects the government’s commitment to bolster domestic food production.

As the rabi season progresses, farmers and stakeholders alike are hopeful that these gains can be sustained, leading to a fruitful harvest that will help ensure food security across the nation.
