Puducherry to Launch Fisheries Project for Sustainable Growth
The Department of Fisheries, under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, is set to launch a significant Fisheries Infrastructure Project on September 1, 2026. This initiative, which is part of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), aims to enhance fisheries infrastructure and promote sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities in Puducherry.
The event will take place at Kamarajar Manimadapam and will feature esteemed guests, including Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Hon’ble Union Minister for Fisheries, and various other dignitaries, state ministers, and members of parliament. Additionally, local fish farmers, including women involved in fishing, will participate in the program, highlighting the community-driven approach of this initiative.
Strengthening Fisheries Infrastructure
Puducherry is becoming a model for sustainable fisheries development, showcasing robust investments in infrastructure such as the upgraded Thengaithittu Fishing Harbour and the newly established Fish Landing Centre at Nallavadu. These advancements have significantly improved operations related to fish handling, berthing, auctioning, and safety protocols, which directly benefit the livelihoods of over 600 fishing families.
An innovative focus is also placed on cooperative-led seaweed farming through the Advanced Centre for Innovation and Capacity Development (ACICD) at Karaikal. This initiative promotes sustainable practices and aims to empower fisherwomen, aligning with the broader goal of fostering a dynamic Blue Economy in the region.
Cluster Approach for Enhanced Efficiency
In a move to bolster asset development further, the government has designated Karaikal as a Fishing Harbour Cluster under PMMSY. A Smart and Integrated Fishing Harbour is being constructed in the area with an investment of Rs. 119.94 Crores. This modern facility will enhance vessel berthing and fish handling, ultimately streamlining the marketing process and improving operational efficiencies.
This comprehensive strategy will support the growth of Fish Farmer Producer Organisations (FFPOs) and fisheries cooperatives. By strengthening their infrastructure and access to modern resources, finances, and markets, the initiative aims to harness the untapped fisheries potential of Puducherry sustainably.
Through collective action and improved participation in the fisheries value chain, this project promises to generate employment opportunities, improve incomes, and present new avenues of livelihood for the coastal communities of Puducherry.
