PM Modi Launches Cutting-Edge Indoor Cricket Academies in Six Northeastern States
Narendra Modi inaugurated a network of indoor cricket academies across six northeastern states of India on Tuesday, aiming to enhance sports infrastructure and grassroots development in the region. The launch took place virtually from Gangtok, with state-of-the-art facilities established in Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland. These academies, supported by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), are designed to provide consistent training opportunities, particularly during the lengthy monsoon season that affects the area.
Flagship Facility in Manipur
The Luwangpokpa Cricket Stadium in Imphal features the Manipur Cricket Association’s indoor academy, which is being hailed as a flagship facility. This academy includes three practice pitches, a gymnasium, administrative offices, and a swimming pool, all aimed at supporting high-performance training year-round. Lairenjam Geetranjan Singh, secretary of the Manipur Cricket Association, described the inauguration as a “historic moment” for cricket in the state. He emphasized that this world-class facility will allow local players to train continuously, particularly during the rainy season, without needing to travel elsewhere. Singh also noted that the BCCI will cover the maintenance and operational costs for the first two years, which will significantly ease the financial burden on the association. He highlighted the recent achievements of Manipur’s cricket team, which reached five domestic finals in 2025 and secured two Under-19 titles, showcasing the potential of local talent nurtured over the years.
Arunachal Pradesh’s Landmark Academy
In Arunachal Pradesh, the indoor academy located in Doimukh was celebrated as a “landmark day” by Arunachal Cricket Association president Nabam Vivek. He pointed out that this facility would serve as a turning point for cricket in the state, especially given the six to seven months of monsoon that often hampers training. Senior player Techi Doria echoed these sentiments, stating that the new facility would eliminate previous challenges related to training during the rainy season. Doria expressed optimism that the academy would inspire players to maintain consistent training schedules, thereby enhancing their skills and performance. The establishment of this academy is seen as a crucial step toward improving the overall cricketing landscape in Arunachal Pradesh.
Strengthening the Northeast Sports Ecosystem
During the inauguration event, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of such infrastructure in nurturing local talent and providing better training opportunities. He stated that these academies would play a significant role in strengthening the growing sports ecosystem in the Northeast. Modi’s visit to Gangtok also included the launch of several other development projects, highlighting the government’s commitment to expanding sporting and infrastructure capabilities across the region. The establishment of these indoor cricket academies is expected to foster a new generation of athletes, ensuring that the Northeast becomes a prominent hub for sports in India.
