PM Modi Addresses National Security Challenges at Police Conference
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently attended the 59th All India Conference of Director Generals and Inspector Generals of Police in Bhubaneswar. The conference took place over two days, from November 30 to December 1, 2024. It brought together top police officials from across the country to discuss pressing security issues. Focus on Emerging Security Threats
During the conference, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the growing threats posed by digital fraud, cyber-crimes, and advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). The Prime Minister introduced the concept of SMART policing, which stands for Strategic, Meticulous, Adaptable, Reliable, and Transparent. He encouraged police forces to adopt this approach to improve their effectiveness. Modi praised the initiatives already taken in urban policing and suggested that these should be implemented across 100 cities nationwide. He stressed the importance of using technology to alleviate the workload of police officers, proposing that police stations become central hubs for resource allocation.
National Police Hackathon Proposal
In a bid to foster innovation, Prime Minister Modi proposed the idea of a National Police Hackathon. He noted the success of previous hackathons in addressing key issues and suggested that this initiative could lead to practical solutions for the police force. The Prime Minister also underscored the importance of port security and called for a comprehensive future action plan to address this critical area.
The discussions at the conference were not limited to technology and innovation. They also covered a wide range of national security challenges, including counter-terrorism, left-wing extremism, and narco-trafficking. Honoring Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s Legacy
Prime Minister Modi took a moment to honor the legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, particularly in relation to the Ministry of Home Affairs. He urged the entire security establishment, from the Ministry to local police stations, to pay homage to Patel on his 150th birth anniversary. Modi called for a collective commitment to improve the image, professionalism, and capabilities of the police force.
The conference also included in-depth discussions on emerging security concerns along the borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar. Participants reviewed the implementation of newly enacted criminal laws and shared best practices in policing. The Prime Minister’s leadership and vision were evident throughout the proceedings, as he guided discussions toward actionable outcomes.
A Collaborative Approach to National Security
The conference was attended by key figures in the government, including the Union Home Minister, the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, and the National Security Advisor. It was held in a hybrid format, allowing participation from over 750 officers of various ranks across states and union territories. This collaborative approach highlights the importance of unity in tackling national security challenges.
