PM E-DRIVE Scheme: India’s Push for Electric Vehicles and Cleaner Air

The PM E-DRIVE Scheme will have a total budget of ₹10,900 crore and will be implemented over the next two years. Here’s how the government plans to use this money:

1. Incentives for Buying Electric Vehicles

The government has set aside ₹3,679 crore to offer incentives for people who buy electric two-wheelers (e-2Ws), three-wheelers (e-3Ws), e-ambulances, e-trucks, and other EVs. This will help support the sale of around 24.79 lakh e-2Ws, 3.16 lakh e-3Ws, and 14,028 e-buses.

When someone buys an EV, they will get an e-voucher on their mobile phone. This voucher, linked to the buyer’s Aadhaar, will offer a discount, and the buyer can submit it to the dealer when making the purchase. The dealer will then upload the voucher on the PM E-DRIVE portal, ensuring the buyer gets the incentive.

2. Special Focus on E-Ambulances

For the first time, the government will provide ₹500 crore to promote e-ambulances. These electric ambulances will offer cleaner and more comfortable transportation for patients, and new safety standards will be developed for them with the help of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and other organizations.

3. E-Buses for Cleaner Public Transport

Public transport will also benefit from the scheme, with ₹4,391 crore set aside for buying 14,028 e-buses for major cities. These buses will help reduce pollution in cities with large populations like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Hyderabad. Some of these buses will also run between cities and states. Cities that replace their old buses through scrapping programs will be given preference when receiving the new e-buses.

4. Reducing Pollution from Trucks

Trucks are a major source of air pollution, and the government is taking steps to fix this by promoting e-trucks. ₹500 crore will be used to offer incentives for people who switch to electric trucks, especially those who provide a scrapping certificate from an approved scrapping center.

5. Building More EV Charging Stations

To make it easier for people to charge their electric vehicles, the government plans to set up public charging stations across cities with high EV use and along important highways. A total of ₹2,000 crore will be used to install 22,100 fast chargers for electric cars, 1,800 fast chargers for e-buses, and 48,400 fast chargers for e-scooters and e-rickshaws.

6. Modernizing Testing Facilities

As more advanced EV technologies are developed, the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) will modernize its testing centers to ensure that all EVs meet the latest safety and performance standards. ₹780 crore will be invested in this modernization process.

7. Promoting Local Manufacturing and Jobs

The PM E-DRIVE Scheme also aims to strengthen India’s electric vehicle industry. By encouraging domestic manufacturing, the government hopes to reduce its dependence on imports and build a strong supply chain for EVs. This will create more job opportunities in manufacturing and in the installation of charging infrastructure, contributing to Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-reliant India).
