India is getting ready for another big campaign to promote cleanliness across the country. The Swachhata Hi Seva 2024 campaign will run for two weeks, starting from September 17 and ending on October 2, which marks Gandhi Jayanti and the celebration of Swachh Bharat Diwas. This campaign has been held every year since 2017 to bring attention to cleanliness and to encourage people to help make India cleaner.

This year’s campaign, like in the past, is being led by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) along with the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS) under the Ministry of Jal Shakti. The theme for 2024 is “Swabhav Swachhata Sanskaar Swachhata” (4S). The goal of this theme is to make cleanliness a habit for everyone, so that keeping our surroundings clean becomes a part of daily life.

A Clean India Mission

The Swachh Bharat Mission was launched on October 2, 2014, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On Independence Day of that year, he spoke from the Red Fort, calling on everyone to join in keeping India clean. This year, 2024, marks the 10th anniversary of the mission, making it a special year for the Swachh Bharat campaign.

On Independence Day 2024, Prime Minister Modi again highlighted how much the Swachh Bharat Mission has changed people’s behavior. He pointed out that cleanliness is now part of our daily routine. The 4S campaign focuses on making cleanliness a natural habit and encourages everyone to think about how they can keep their surroundings clean every day.

Main Goals of the Swabhav Swachhata Sanskaar Swachhata (4S) Campaign

The 4S campaign has three main goals:

  1. Public Participation: Encourage people to take part in cleanliness drives and spread awareness about the importance of keeping India clean.
  2. Mega Cleanliness Drives: Focus on cleaning tough and dirty spots across the country, turning these areas into clean spaces.
  3. SafaiMitra Suraksha Shivir: Set up health camps for sanitation workers to ensure their safety and well-being.

The campaign will involve citizens from all walks of life, including students, industries, NGOs, and local leaders like Gram Panchayats and urban local bodies. The aim is to bring everyone together, from villages to cities, to make cleanliness everyone’s responsibility.

Government Support

The Whole of Society approach means that all citizens, industries, and government bodies will work together. Meanwhile, the Whole of Government approach ensures participation from States, Union Territories (UTs), Chief Ministers, Central Ministries, and local officials such as Members of Parliament and Mayors.

Preparations for this year’s campaign are already underway. Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Union Minister C. R. Patil recently held a meeting with top officials from MoHUA and DDWS to review the plans. Meetings are also being held with different States to make sure they are ready for the campaign.

Importance of Cleanliness in India

The Swachh Bharat Mission has made great progress in the past 10 years. Cleanliness is now part of the culture in many parts of India. This year’s Swabhav Swachhata Sanskaar Swachhata (4S) campaign will continue to build on that progress. It aims to inspire people to keep their homes, streets, and public places clean, creating a healthier and more beautiful India.

As the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign kicks off, let’s all join hands to make our nation cleaner and greener, just as Mahatma Gandhi envisioned. With everyone’s help, we can make a big difference for future generations.
