Today’s Google Doodle honors Sophie Xeon, a Scottish musician, producer, and DJ, on what would have been her birthday. Sophie Xeon, also known as SOPHIE, was born on September 17, 1986, and sadly passed away on January 30, 2021. She is remembered for her bold, experimental pop and electronic music.
From a young age, Sophie was inspired by electronic and rave music, which she first heard through cassette tapes from her father. Using toy keyboards, she started making her own music. In the 2000s, Sophie moved to Berlin and became part of the dance-pop group Motherland, performing in Germany and the UK. Despite her growing success, Sophie preferred to stay out of the public eye and remained mostly anonymous.
Sophie’s solo career took off with the release of popular songs like “Bipp” and “Lemonade.” These tracks were included in her 2015 album PRODUCT. Besides her solo work, Sophie also produced music for famous artists like Charli XCX, Kim Petras, and Madonna.
In 2017, Sophie publicly came out as a trans woman, marking a turning point in her career. She began doing more interviews and public appearances. The following year, she released Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides, an album that mixed electronic beats with songs about identity and self-acceptance. This album earned Sophie Xeon a Grammy nomination, making her the first trans artist nominated in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category.
Sophie Xeon will always be remembered for changing the pop music landscape with her unique sound. In September 2024, an album called SOPHIE, produced by Sophie and her brother, is set to be released in her honor.
Happy Birthday, Sophie Xeon!
