PCB Launches Investigation into Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman Following T20 World Cup Elimination

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is launching an inquiry into the injuries of key players Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman, which have raised concerns following the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Aaqib Javed, a member of the selection committee, disclosed that the selectors were unaware of the players’ injuries during the tournament and have requested a thorough investigation into how these injuries occurred and why they were not reported earlier. The selectors emphasized the need for better communication regarding player fitness during such critical events.

Selectors Demand Clarity on Injury Reports

During a press conference, Aaqib Javed, alongside fellow selectors Misbah-ul-Haq, Sarfaraz Ahmed, and Asad Shafiq, expressed their surprise at the lack of information regarding Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman’s injuries. Javed stated that the selectors had no prior knowledge of the players’ fitness issues while they were competing in the World Cup. He raised questions about the communication protocols in place, particularly regarding injury updates from the coaching staff and medical team. “Fakhar is also injured – on this, we have also requested the cricket board for an inquiry. How can it be that Fakhar is also unfit and we only found out after the World Cup ended?” Javed remarked, highlighting the need for transparency in player health matters. The selectors are now urging the PCB to investigate the circumstances surrounding the injuries and assess whether proper fitness updates were provided during the tournament.

Babar Azam Absent from Bangladesh Series

Aaqib Javed further clarified the absence of Babar Azam from the ongoing ODI series against Bangladesh. He confirmed that Azam is currently dealing with an injury that has sidelined him not only from the series but also from participating in the domestic National T20 Cup. “Babar Azam is facing an injury, which is why he wasn’t included against Bangladesh. He also wanted to play the National T20 Cup, but his health condition didn’t allow him,” Javed explained. He emphasized the importance of understanding how and when injuries occur, questioning whether the players would have been declared fit had Pakistan advanced further in the tournament. “Today the situation is that Babar Azam is not fit to play and Fakhar Zaman is not fit to play. If we had made the semifinal, would they have suddenly become fit? That is the question,” he stated.

Focus on Emerging Talent

In light of the injuries to key players, Aaqib Javed revealed that the team management had already planned to field a younger squad for the series against Bangladesh. This strategy aligns with their recent approach of integrating emerging players into the team, similar to their tactics during the 2024 tour of Zimbabwe. “We had already decided before the World Cup that we would not send a full-strength squad here. We wanted to give opportunities to younger players so we have more options going forward,” Javed noted. This decision reflects a commitment to developing new talent within the squad, ensuring that the team remains competitive in future tournaments while also addressing current injury concerns.
